WPSS: Job Opening - Principal at Varnado High School

September is Library Card Sign-up Month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, when libraries nationwide join the American Library Association (ALA) to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Libraries play a crucial role in the education and development of children, offering a variety of programs to spark creativity and stimulate an interest in reading and learning. Through access to technology, media resources and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams, explore new passions and interests, and find their voice.

At Washington Parish Library, patrons of all ages can find a variety of educational resources and activities, including Tech Time, Book Signings, Financial Workshops, and more!

“Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children,” says Sonnet Ireland, Library Director. “But it’s important that we don’t forget the needs of teens and adults. That’s why we have library programs that serve students of all ages and backgrounds such as our popular story times and movie times, as well as fun programs to help the lifelong learner with technology or other important skills. We also have laptops and hotspots that adult residents can check out!”

This year, Tony Award-winning performer, actress, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Idina Menzel (Frozen, Wicked) and her sister, author and educator Cara Mentzel, will serve as honorary chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month. Idina and Cara are excited to remind everyone that one of the best places to find your voice is at the library. During Library Card Sign-Up Month, they want us to explore all the library has to offer, like new children’s books, access to technology, and educational programming.

Washington Parish Library, along with libraries everywhere, continues to adapt and expand services to meet the evolving community needs. To sign up for a library card or to learn more about the library’s resources and programs, please visit https://washingtonparishlibrary.info/.

STPSO Locates Ponchatoula Stabbing Suspect

A woman, wanted for stabbing a Ponchatoula store clerk multiple times and featured in a BOLO put out on social media by the Ponchatoula Police Department, was located Tuesday (August 30, 2022) morning in St. Tammany Parish.

The story begins in Ponchatoula on August 26, 2022 at around 10:30 PM when Ponchatoula PD officers and Detectives were dispatched to Shan’s Quick Stop at the corner of N. Hoover Road and Hwy 22 East in reference to a hold up alarm. Officers located a male victim inside the store that had been stabbed multiple times. The victim was transported by Acadian to the hospital and is expected to recover. The suspect had already fled the scene. Detectives reviewed surveillance video and could see the suspect go behind the counter and started stabbing the clerk. The suspect's photo was released on social media.

The story ends in St. Tammany Parish on August 30, 2022 at around 7:30 AM when a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s patrol sergeant observed a dark blue Nissan Frontier pickup, flipped over in the wood line near the intersection of Louisiana Highway 1088 and Louisiana Highway 36. When he stopped to offer assistance and to check on the driver, the sergeant was confronted by a distraught woman wielding a knife and threatening to kill herself. He called for backup, and more deputies responded to the scene. The woman stabbed herself multiple times before the deputies were able to use non-lethal means to subdue her. They removed the knife from her possession and took her into custody. She was transported by emergency medical personnel to a local hospital. The woman was identified as 32 year-old Tabitha Mielke of Lacombe and matched the description of the woman wanted for stabbing the store clerk in Ponchatoula.

Upon her release from the hospital, Mielke will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center as a fugitive on warrants from Ponchatoula charging Mielke with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, Vehicle Burglary, and Terrorizing. Louisiana State Police is handling the crash.

Two Arrested in Talisheek-area Murder

Two men, 24 year-old Dain McCann and 27 year-old Jacob Sloan, have been arrested following the murder of 30 year-old Jon McIntyre which occurred late Monday (August 29, 2022) night near Talisheek.

Shortly before midnight, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 73000 block of Tee Street near Talisheek after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots and observed a man who appeared to be deceased outside a neighboring residence. The neighbor also reported seeing a vehicle fleeing the area. Responding deputies located the body of the male victim, later identified as Jon McIntyre, lying by the front door of the residence.

Deputies had interactions with McCann and Sloan earlier in the day in connection with an ongoing argument between the McIntye and one of the men. STPSO deputies located McCann and Sloan and they were taken into custody without incident. Evidence from the scene and statements provided during the investigation identified McCann as the shooter and that Sloan had provided assistance by bringing McCann to and from the location.

McCann was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center for Second-degree Murder and Obstruction of Justice. Sloan was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center for Accessory After the Fact and Obstruction of Justice.

An autopsy will be conducted later today and St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston will make a determination of the cause and manner of death.

Parish Animal Shelter Reports on Parvo Outbreak

Washington Parish Animal Shelter Manager Kelsey Knight has advised that “Due to the recent outbreak of an unknown strain of Parvo virus, Washington Parish Shelters will have to temporarily stop the intake of all dogs under the age of 2 years. We are also recommending if you have a dog(s) under the age of 2 that has not been vaccinated in the past six months, to have your pet(s) vaccinated. While Washington Parish has yet to have a case in a shelter, we must stay vigilant and protect the animals as best as we can.”

Regarding cleaning, Knight advised that “Parvo Virus is a hard to protect from and is very costly to cure and it can live in the environment for over a year and cannot be killed by normal household cleaners. If you have an animal outbreak with parvo, please keep all other pets away from any areas where that animal may have defecated. The best cleaning method is to use a bleach product, please let it sit on the surface for at least 5 minutes before wiping away; also, make sure that any cleaners are completely rinsed as bleach can be an irritant.”

Symptoms include vomiting, bloody stool, and lethargy.

STPSO detectives learned Maxted shot a man multiple times following a verbal altercation at Maxted’s residence. Detectives also learned that Maxted went to the victim’s residence earlier that same day and made threats against the victim’s juvenile family member. At some point during the verbal altercation at Maxted’s residence, Maxted produced a firearm and shot the victim multiple times.

Covington Police Announce Arrest of “Major Fentanyl and Heroin Dealer” Hiding in a Ditch

The Covington Police Department has announced the arrest yesterday (August 23, 2022) of 34 year-old Jovan Williams, whom they identify as a major fentanyl and heroin dealer in Covington.

CPD reports that Williams had evaded officers for more than three weeks but was located Tuesday in the Covington Point neighborhood after attempting to hide in a drainage ditch.

The arrest is a result of a large-scale narcotics investigation conducted by the Covington Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, which encompasses general assignment detectives and narcotics detectives.

Jovan Williams was charged with 2 counts of Obstruction of Justice, 2 counts of Flight from An Officer, Illegal Carrying of Weapons, Possession of Schedule II CDS (Fentanyl),  Distribution/Possession with the Intent to Distribute Schedule II CDS (Fentanyl), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Transactions Involving Proceeds from Drug Offenses, False Representation of a CDS, Drug-Free Zone, and View Outward or Inward Through Windshield or Windows. Further charges are pending.

Covington Police Chief Ferrell stated, “Many people have noticed an uptick in overdoses not only in our community but around the nation. The common theme law enforcement is witnessing is that most deaths from overdoses are related to fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and up to 100 times stronger than morphine. Our officers are frequently finding this drug on the streets of Covington and at the scenes of overdoses at an alarming rate.

The amount of suspected fentanyl that Williams has been charged with is lethal enough to kill approximately 80,000 people, with an approximate street value of $70,000. Let this serve as a message to any other drug dealers in our community. STOP NOW. Under Louisiana state law, if law enforcement can show a connection between a fatal overdose and the dealer who sold the drugs, that drug dealer will be arrested for Second Degree Murder. Williams is not the first, and we are sure there are more dealers in our community. Rest assured that your Police Department is proactive in apprehending dangerous drug dealers. We would like to thank the men and women of our Criminal Investigations Division and Criminal Patrol Division for their efforts in taking a dangerous drug dealer off our streets.”

Update by Bogalusa Police on Tuesday's Murder

The Bogalusa Police Department has advised that Bogalusa Detectives identified and located the vehicle used in the drive-by shooting Tuesday (August 23, 2022) that left 50 year-old Veronique Allen dead at 1421 Main Street in Bogalusa, Louisiana.

Surveillance video in the area captured the vehicle as the shooting took place. More video evidence was gathered and the license plate number was obtained. The vehicle was registered to a subject in western Louisiana, and had been reported stolen early Tuesday. Detectives began tracking the vehicle as it travelled west on Interstate 12, and police agencies in the southwestern portion of the state were contacted. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office located the car and a pursuit was initiated. The suspects evaded police long enough to abandon the car and they escaped on foot. Although they have not yet been located, valuable evidence was left behind.

Bogalusa Detectives travelled to Lafayette Parish Tuesday night to continue the investigation. The vehicle is being processed, and BPD is confident that the suspects will eventually be identified.

Original Story (August 23, 2022)

Bogalusa Mayor Wendy Perrette praised the quick response of law enforcement and asked for the community to remain calm after an apparent drive-by shooting this morning (August 23, 2022) that resulted in the death of a 50 year-old Bogalusa woman.

According to preliminary information, the victim was an innocent bystander and not an intended target when the shots were fired in the 1400 block of Main Street.

Bogalusa Police report that several people were inside the residence at 1421 Main Street and that 50 year-old Veronique Allen was deceased when police arrived on the scene. BPD further states that detectives are following several leads and that anyone with information is asked to call the Bogalusa Police Detective Division at (985) 732-6238.

The Louisiana State Police, Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, and federal authorities are assisting the Bogalusa Police Department.

“We have had enough violence in Bogalusa, and I call on every citizen to cooperate with police while they investigate this horrible crime,” Perrette said. “The devaluing of human life in the name of the drug trade and gang allegiances should never happen anywhere, and the people of our community are fed up.”

“Bogalusa P.D. can’t do it alone,” the Mayor said. “We need every citizen to stand up, step forward, and unite against crime. We need to seek rational, lawful means to resolve disputes, and never resort to violence. We need our faith community to stand resolutely in reminding people that we worship a God of peace – a God who calls upon all of us to play a role in stemming the tide of violence.”

Perrette remains quarantined at home after testing positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.
