Select Scab-Resistant Pecan Varieties for Home Orchards

Pecans and pecan trees are quintessential parts of the southern diet and landscape, although, as reflected by its scientific name (Carya illinoinensis), the pecan tree’s native range extends beyond the South.

A primary criterion for choosing pecan varieties for yards and home orchards is resistance to a fungal disease called pecan scab. Scab causes lesions on leaves, stems, and nuts and can reduce or eliminate nut production in susceptible varieties. Even if you’re willing to spray multiple times during the season to protect trees from scab and other disease and insect issues, once trees reach a certain size, this will not be feasible without commercial spray equipment.

Pecan trees generally need cross-pollination. Some trees produce male flowers that release pollen earlier than the tree’s female flowers are receptive to pollen. These are Type I (protandrous / early pollen-shedding) trees. Other trees produce female flowers that are receptive before male flowers release pollen. These are Type II (protogynous / late pollen-shedding). Having both Type I and Type II trees helps to ensure adequate pollination.

Pecan trees are wind pollinated. While flowers can be pollinized by trees up to one-quarter of a mile away, it’s recommended that trees be within 150 feet of each other for optimal cross-pollination.

Elliott (a Type II variety) has long been a reliable, scab-resistant producer of high quality, though small, nuts and is a staple variety for many commercial pecan growers in Louisiana. It may take 8 to 12 years for nut production to begin. It has a strong tendency to alternate bear, meaning that a year of heavy nut production will generally be followed by a year with little nut production. Elliott may break bud early in northern Louisiana and thus be injured by late freezes in some years, but this isn’t likely to be a problem in southern Louisiana.

Other Type II varieties with good scab resistance include Excel, Kanza, and McMillan.

Scab-resistant Type I varieties include Amling, Gafford, Jackson, and Syrup Mill. Amling is recognized as a particularly attractive tree, as well.

Unfortunately, trees can lose their resistance to scab. (More accurately, the scab fungus can evade the trees’ genetic resistance.) This has happened in some formerly scab-resistant varieties like Desirable, Melrose, and Schley. Planting varieties that are resistant to scab now does not guarantee that they will be resistant 50 years from now.

Pecan trees can eventually reach 70 or more feet wide. Commercial growers sometimes plant them closer to each other (e.g., 35 feet) to maximize yield and then thin the trees once they start shading each other. If you’re planting for the long term and don’t want to eventually be faced with the need to remove alternate trees, consider planting them 50 to 70 feet apart.

When choosing planting locations, keep in mind that pecan trees tend to drop limbs and that nut husks can stain driveways, etc.

Let me know if you have questions.

On December 6, 2022, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) special agents conducted conducted surveillance of the 1900 block of Frenchmen Street in New Orleans.  Their surveillance was for an unrelated investigation during which they observed Wilson. Wilson drove a white Dodge Challenger with one passenger (later identified as Toca). Wilson, Toca, and a third co-defendant Harry Banks engaged in apparent illegal narcotics transactions, while in possession of firearms.  Agents observed Banks enter the white Dodge Challenger and exit with a pistol in his left hand. Banks then appeared to conceal the firearm in his waistband.  Toca was found with several suspected Tramadol pills and a Polymer Model P80, 9-millimeter pistol.  The firearm also had a Glock Model 19 slide.  ATF Agents notified the New Orleans Police Department who detained Toca and Banks.  During the search, officers recovered a Sarsilmaz Model Sar 9, 9-millimeter pistol, from inside the center console of the vehicle.

Wilson and Toca was charged with conspiring to distribute Fentanyl (Count 1), conspiring to possess firearms in furtherance of  drug trafficking activity (Count 2), and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime (Count 3). In addition, Wilson was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm (Count 4).

  • On Count 1, Wilson and Toca faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $1,000,000, at least 3 years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00.
  • On Count 2, Wilson and Toca faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to 3 years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00.
  • On Count 3, Wilson and Toca faces up to 5 years in prison (to be run consecutive to all other counts), a fine of up to $250,000, up to 3 years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00.
  • On Count 4, Wilson faces up to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to 3 years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun track violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.

STPSO Marine Division Helps Save Four Boaters

Members of the St. Tammany Parish Marine Division helped save four people from the frigid waters of Lake Borgne early Friday (December 29, 2023) morning.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday, the STPSO Marine Division was contacted by the U.S. Coast Guard and asked to assist in locating four boaters who had gone into the water after their 40-foot fishing boat sunk in Lake Borgne near the CSX railroad bridge.

With the help of the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, responding marine deputies located two of the individuals and pulled them out the water, but did not see the other two individuals.

Deputies observed a large tugboat nearby and while advising its occupants of the situation, they learned workers on the tugboat had pulled the other two individuals from the water and they were aboard the tugboat.

STPSO deputies took all four boaters to the Rigolets Marina, where emergency medical personnel were staged. All four were transported to local hospitals to be treated for exposure to the cold water.

Madisonville Man Dies in Head-on Crash

Thursday (December 28, 2023) morning, shortly before 7:30 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 22 near Watters Road in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 47-year-old Dustin Thompson of Madisonville.

The initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Thompson was westbound on LA Hwy 22 in a 2017 Nissan Altima. At the same time, a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee was eastbound on LA Hwy 22. After impacting the guardrail, the Nissan traveled back onto the roadway before crossing the centerline and into the opposing lane. The Nissan then struck the Jeep head-on.

Despite being properly restrained, Thompson sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Jeep was properly restrained, but sustained moderate injuries. The driver of the Jeep was transported to a local hospital. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis.

Youth Challenges for 2024: Parental Guidance Needed

As we navigate through 2024, it's crucial for parents to be aware of the significant challenges their children might face. These challenges not only impact their immediate health and wellbeing but also their long-term success. Here are five key issues:

Texting While Driving: The habit of texting behind the wheel is alarmingly common among teenagers, often mimicking adult behavior. This risky practice can lead to devastating consequences. It's essential to educate and enforce the importance of focused driving to safeguard not only your child's life but also those of others on the road.

Snapchat/TikTok Influence: The impact of platforms like Snapchat and TikTok on young minds can't be underestimated. These apps may expose them to content that contradicts the values you're trying to instill, from glorifying risky behaviors to desensitizing them to serious social issues. Limiting access and monitoring usage is crucial in this digital era.

Vaping Epidemic: The surge in vaping among teenagers is a growing concern. It's not just a passing trend but an addiction with long-term health implications. Parents need to prioritize addressing this issue early to prevent a lifetime struggle with nicotine dependency.

Respect and Accountability: There's a troubling trend of declining respect and accountability among youths. Teaching your children to respect authority and be accountable for their actions is fundamental for their development into responsible adults. This value system is essential for a harmonious and successful life.

Technology and Social Media Overuse: Excessive screen time, including video games and social media, is draining the youth of motivation and real-life experiences. It's important to encourage a balance, promoting real-world interactions and family time over digital engagement.

Happy parenting,

Officer Gomez

Covington Man Found Guilty of Molestation and Sexual Battery of a Child Under Age 13

Interim District Attorney Collin Sims reports that on Thursday (December 21, 2023), following a four-
day trial, a jury found Daniel Lascari, age 41 and of Covington, guilty of molestation and sexual battery of a juvenile under the age of 13. Following the verdict, Sims stated, “This case is a tremendous example of this office’s commitment to vigorously prosecute these types of cases and our dedicated prosecutors’ relentless pursuit of justice in the face of obstacles encountered during the prosecution of this child’s sexual abuser. Additionally, it is essential to the successful prosecution of these cases the dedication shown in this case by teachers, counselors, law enforcement officers, medical professionals, and our partners at the Children’s Advocacy Center.” The case was presided over by District Judge Scott Gardner.

In March of 2018, the then 8-year-old victim told her teacher that when she went to the bathroom, she noticed she was bleeding. The teacher brought her to the counselor’s office. The victim then reported to the counselor that she might be “starting her period” or that it could be because her mother’s fiancé “got carried away last night.” She went on to describe to the counselor what the man had been doing to her for approximately 8 months. School officials immediately notified law enforcement of the situation and an investigation commenced. During the course of the investigation, the victim disclosed details to trained personnel with the Department of Children and Family Services, Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Advocacy Center’s Hope House. She described how her mother’s fiancé would come into her bedroom at night, move her from a top bunk to a bottom bunk and rub peppermint lotion all over her body, including inside her private area. While he was doing this, he told her “this is the way people relax.” She was able to describe in detail how he moved his fingers and how he’d once made her massage his private part.

At trial, the State called the victim’s teacher and the counselor as witnesses. They testified that the victim was a bright and empathetic student but that she suffered from persistent test anxiety. They said she’d sit in her chair during test time and pull out her hair.

The mother of the victim testified how she was reluctant to have the victim testify because she was concerned about her daughter. Following the disclosure, she relocated with her daughter to another state. She described in painful detail the toll that the abuse took on the victim. She told the jury how the victim spent over a year in counseling and would likely need further treatment. Despite the mother’s reservations, she said that she relented when the victim insisted she was finally ready to confront her abuser in court. The victim, who testified about the sexual abuse, also described for the jury that the defendant on one occasion had punched her in the ribs because he thought she was stretching out a shirt. She testified that he’d threatened to “kill [her] and bury [her] body in the back yard.”

Prosecutors presented various items into evidence during the course of the trial: The victim’s panties with the blood stains from the day of her initial disclosure, a bottle of peppermint lotion that police found in the victim’s bed along with a piece of tissue that had blood on it. A DNA expert testified that the blood on the panties was the victim’s and that there was DNA consistent with the defendant found on the inside crotch portion of the victim’s panties. The bloody tissue found in the victim’s room also contained DNA material consistent with the defendant’s DNA profile.

The defendant, carrying a Bible with him to the stand, offered testimony that the jury, as indicated by its verdict, found to be unworthy of belief.

On cross-examination, Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Authement confronted the defendant with an alias the defendant had adopted to create, sell and install his artwork in St. Tammany, Metairie, and Baton Rouge. Following his release on bond shortly after his arrest in 2018 and while awaiting trial for sexually abusing a minor, the defendant concealed his true identity by using the alias “Dan Matisse” to gain entry into unsuspecting homes to install his artwork.

ADA Authement had the defendant read to the jury text messages he had previously sent to the victim’s mother. One notable message referenced the incontinence that had been plaguing the victim as a result of the abuse, “Tell [victim] to sleep in her [bed] if she keeps farting n shitting on my side of the bed, i dont need her dirty ass ruining my nice sheets.”

In her closing argument, Assistant District Attorney Casey Allen told the Jury, “It’s been almost 7 years since this little girl began living with this real-life monster under her bed.” In her rebuttal to the defense argument, ADA Authement fought back at the defendant’s assertion that these charges stemmed from a manipulative 8-year-old child, “you would have to believe this was a massive conspiracy involving a child, her teacher, multiple counselors, doctors, nurses, and laboratory experts. She’s not inventing these things. She lived it and could describe it because she endured it. Give the victim justice and find him guilty as charged.”

The defendant faces 25 - 99 years in prison on each charge when he is sentenced, which is currently scheduled for January 9, 2024.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Elizabeth Authement and Casey Allen. The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the jury, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, The St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, Children’s Hospital, the Hope House, the Audrey Hepburn CARE Center, and the District Attorney’s Office of Chattanooga, Tennessee for their assistance in this case.

Man Wanted Out of St. Tammany Located in Las Vegas

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith would like to thank the U.S. Marshals Service Violent Offender Task Force for their assistance in locating and apprehending 25 year-old Shawn Landry, a violent subject wanted out of St. Tammany Parish.

On November 23, 2023, St Tammany Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 1400 block of Beech Street near Slidell in reference to a residential burglary in progress. Upon arrival, deputies observed a vehicle still running with the driver’s side door open and parked in the roadway. A male subject, later identified as Shawn Landry, was observed fleeing the scene. Additional deputies including K9s responded to the scene to assist with locating the suspect but were unsuccessful.

The female victim was visibly distraught and disclosed to deputies that she had met Landry earlier that month and he had been keeping her hostage inside the residence. She told deputies that during that time Landry had repeatedly raped her, strangled her to the point of passing out and physically abused her.  He had also forced his way back into the residence after being locked out and had taken her phone and vehicle.

Following an investigation, warrants were issued for the arrest of Landry for two counts of Home Invasion, two counts of Attempted Second-degree Murder, one count of Second-degree Rape, one count of Theft of a Motor Vehicle, three counts of Simple Assault and one count False Imprisonment.

Believing he had fled the area, deputies requested the help of the U.S. Marshal’s Service in locating Landry.

On December 19, 2023, the U.S. Marshals Service Nevada Violent Offender Task Force located and apprehended Landry at a Las Vegas-area apartment complex, following a short barricade. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department assisted with the arrest. Landry is being held on the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office charges at the Clark County Detention Center pending extradition to Louisiana.

“We have a great working relationship with the U.S. Marshals Service and have a detective assigned to its task force,” Sheriff Smith said. “We will continue to work together with our federal partners and use every resource available to located and apprehend individuals who commit violent crimes in St. Tammany Parish. I thank everyone involved in this case.”

Bicyclist Killed in St. Tammany Crash

On Sunday (December 17, 2023), shortly after 3:30 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash on LA Hwy 1082 near Smith Road in St. Tammany Parish. The crash claimed the life of 45-year-old Sean Brady of Covington.

The initial investigation revealed that Brady was southbound on LA Hwy 1082 on a bicycle. At the same time, a 2002 GMC Sierra, driven by 22-year-old Blake Griffith of Bogalusa, was also southbound on LA Hwy 1082, directly behind the bicycle. For reasons still under investigation, the GMC struck the bicyclist.

Brady was wearing a helmet, but he sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the GMC was properly restrained and was uninjured. This crash remains under investigation and Troopers will forward their findings to the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s office for consultation of criminal and/or traffic violations pending the completion of the investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted, follow all traffic laws, and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
