Slidell Man Found Guilty of Indecent Behavior Involving A Child Under Age Thirteen

District Attorney Warren Montgomery reports that on Thursday, January 26, 2023, a St. Tammany Parish jury unanimously found Antoine Asara Hartley, age 47 and of Slidell, Louisiana, guilty of indecent behavior of a child under the age thirteen. District Judge Reginald Badeaux presided over the case.

In August of 2019, the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office received a complaint in reference to inappropriate comments made to a juvenile by an older man. The mother of the victim reported to officers that her daughter told her that she had been inappropriately touched by the defendant.

The victim reported to officers that she and her sisters would often visit her neighbors to babysit their young children, and the defendant did as well. The sisters said the defendant made them uncomfortable, making comments like “if you were older we would be dating.” He also touched the victim’s breasts and thigh.

In a recorded video played at trial, the defendant repeatedly blamed the sisters. He admitted to telling the sisters that he could be their boyfriend, but insisted it was only a scare tactic to keep them away, since he claimed that the eleven-year-old was wearing a bikini one size too small and her sister would not keep her legs closed while wearing a skirt.

The defendant has a prior history, having been convicted on two charges of molestation of a juvenile, aggravated battery, and failure to register as a sex offender. Additionally, the defendant had been released only months prior to committing the instant offense, following the completion of his sentence for a conviction of forcible rape.

Defense counsel told the jury that his crimes were “30 years ago,” and “he’s learned his lesson.”

The defendant faces life in prison without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence. He will be sentenced on February 16, 2023.

Assistant District Attorneys Elizabeth Authement and Brandi Dohre prosecuted the case. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.

Man Guilty of Mandeville Robbery - Faces 198 Years in Prison

Attorney Warren Montgomery reports that on Friday, January 20, 2023, Daniel Martinez, age 26 and of Florida, was found guilty as charged of one count of armed robbery with a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with a robbery that took place in Mandeville.

On June 20, 2021, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from a gas station in Mandeville. The victim, a store clerk, stated that a man in a white Honda Pilot parked and entered the store near closing time and asked for a pack of cigarettes. The man then pulled out a firearm and demanded the victim open the cash register and put cash in his bag. After the victim complied, the perpetrator demanded he get down on the floor. The victim stayed on the floor until the perpetrator left and then crawled to the manager’s office to call 911. The victim was able to describe the perpetrator’s clothing, a tattoo above his right eye, a blue bandana he used to conceal his face before he pulled the gun, as well as the blue spray-painted gun he pointed at the victim.

Video surveillance footage obtained from the gas station corroborated the victim’s description and depicted the robber to be a Hispanic male with a blue bandana around his neck, a Puma sweatshirt, a Washington Redskins hat, blue and grey shorts, and white shoes. Detectives were able to get a partial license plate number from surveillance cameras across the street. Through use of a law enforcement database, the detectives were able to develop the entire Texas license plate number and learned the vehicle had been previously reported stolen out of Alexandria, Louisiana.

Further investigation revealed the vehicle was involved in a high-speed, fatal automobile accident in St. Martin Parish approximately 3 hours after the robbery in Mandeville. Louisiana State Police had responded to the accident in St. Martin and identified the driver of the vehicle as Daniel Martinez.

St. Tammany detectives compared the State Police body cam footage from the scene of the crash to the surveillance video from the armed robbery and determined that Daniel Martinez matched the description of the armed robber – he had a tattoo above his right eye and was wearing the same Puma sweatshirt, blue and grey shorts, and white shoes. Detectives also reviewed his mugshot from St. Martin Parish and confirmed he was the same person who had committed the armed robbery.

In its investigation of the fatal traffic accident, Troop I of the Louisiana State Police executed a search warrant on Daniel Martinez’s vehicle and photographed its interior. These photographs depicted the Washington Redskin’s hat, the blue bandana, the bag used in the robbery, and the coin rolls taken during the robbery.

St. Tammany detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Daniel Martinez, who was later apprehended by the United States Marshals Fugitive Taskforce in Florida and extradited to St. Tammany Parish.

At trial, Assistant District Attorney Amanda Gritten stated during opening statements, “During this case you are going to hear about every gas station clerk’s worst nightmare. Daniel Martinez was the one depicted in the surveillance camera that night committing an armed robbery. Daniel Martinez is the one who made the store clerk’s worst nightmare a reality.”

District Judge Raymond Childress presided over the trial. Assistant District Attorneys Amanda Gritten and Tiffany Dover prosecuted the case. The St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Division and Troop I of the Louisiana State Police provided vital assistance throughout the prosecution.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 11, 2023. The defendant has several previous felony convictions and faces a potential 198 years in prison as a repeat offender.

Fentanyl-laced Marijuana, Other Drugs and Assault Rifle Found During St. Tammany Traffic Stop

After St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s detectives located fentanyl-laced marijuana during a traffic stop, Sheriff Randy Smith is reiterating his warning to residents the only safe drugs are those prescribed by a doctor or purchased at a pharmacy.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. Friday, STPSO Narcotics detectives were patrolling the area of the Abita Nursery Subdivision in Covington when they observed a purple Dodge Challenger driving erratically through the neighborhood and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver of the Challenger continued driving for approximately three and a half blocks before finally stopping, at which time, the driver, 43-year-old John Silas Joiner of Mandeville, struggled with detectives before ultimately being taken into custody and being placed in the rear seat of a patrol car.

When emergency medical personnel opened the door of the patrol car to evaluate Silas, he fled and led the detectives and a patrol deputy on a foot pursuit through the neighborhood. He was recaptured a short time later and transported to the Saint Tammany Parish Correctional Center without further incident.

Detectives located approximately 7.5 grams of suspected marijuana which tested positive for both marijuana and Fentanyl and 11 tablets of suspected MDMA (Ecstasy) in Silas’ possession.

Inside his vehicle, detectives located a 9 mm semi-automatic style short-barreled assault rifle with a loaded 50 round drum style magazine, a digital scale, drug packaging materials, a set of brass knuckles, $890 in cash, approximately 28.95 grams of suspected cocaine and 450 counterfeit Oxycodone tablets containing fentanyl.

Joiner, who is currently on parole in this state for distribution of cocaine, morphine, and hydrocodone and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on the following charges: Failure to Stop or Yield, Improper Turning, No Seat Belt,  Driving Without a License, Battery on a Police Officer (Misdemeanor), Resisting a Police Officer with Force or Violence (Felony), Simple Escape; Aggravated Escape (Felony), Possession of Schedule I (Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) (Felony), Possession with the Intent to Distribute Schedule II CDS (Oxycodone) (Felony), Possession with the Intent to Distribute Schedule II CDS (Cocaine) (Felony), Illegal Carry of Weapons; Crime or CDS (Felony), Possession of a Firearm of Carrying a Concealed Weapon by a Person Convicted of Certain Felonies (Felony), Transactions Involving Proceeds from Drug Offenses (Felony), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Misdemeanor), and Possession of Schedule II CDS (Fentanyl) (Felony).

“Fentanyl is a very dangerous drug and it is no secret that it is in our community,” Sheriff Smith said. “When you purchase drugs, even marijuana, off the street, you do not know truly what you are getting, and even a small trace of fentanyl can be deadly. The only safe drugs are those that are purchased from a pharmacy and used as prescribed by a doctor.”
