Bogalusa Man Gets Federal Sentence of Five Years

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Christopher Harris, age 28 and a resident of Bogalusa, was sentenced to sixty (60)  months’ imprisonment, four (4) years of supervised release and a $200 mandatory special assessment fee by U.S. Chief District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown after pleading guilty to two counts of an indictment charging him with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fifty (50) grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine, and distribution of fifty (50) grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine.

According to court documents, on July 26, 2019, agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives used a confidential source to make a controlled purchase of methamphetamine from Harris. The confidential source, under the direction of agents, went to meet Harris to purchase the drugs. The source was greeted at the door by Derrick Mark who made a telephone call to Harris to inform him that the source was at the residence to purchase the drugs from him.  When Harris arrived at the residence, he sold the source approximately one hundred six (106) grams of drugs that tested positive for methamphetamine.

This prosecution was part of an extensive investigation by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Bogalusa Police Department of individuals suspected of trafficking large quantities of methamphetamine and/or firearms in Washington Parish.  The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney AndrĂ© Jones.

Bogalusa Man Indicted for Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm

Jakari Brown, a/k/a “Jakari Lemar,” age 23 and of Bogalusa, was charged on February 25, 2022, in a one-count indictment by a federal grand jury with being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.

According to the indictment, on December 27, 2021, Brown, a convicted felon, illegally possessed a Smith & Wesson Model SW9VE, nine-millimeter pistol.  If convicted, BROWN faces up to ten years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, up to 3 years supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charging document and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts.  PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime.  Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.  As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

This case was investigated by the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney J. Benjamin Myers.

Franklinton Man Arrested Near Folsom

A Washington Parish man was arrested over the weekend after a large cache of drugs was located in his vehicle during a traffic stop near Folsom.

At approximately 1 a.m. Sunday (February 27, 2022) morning, a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s patrol deputy stopped a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche near the intersection of Louisiana Highway 25 and Louisiana Highway 1077 near Folsom, due to the vehicle having an illegal cover over its license plate.

While talking with the driver, Jermaine Brown, age 42 and of Franklinton, the deputy detected the odor of marijuana. A search of the vehicle located 36 grams of marijuana, more than 21 grams of cocaine, 5.8 grams of crack, 3.4 grams of methamphetamine and 178 Ecstasy pills. The deputy also located $1,412 in cash, which is believed to be the proceeds of narcotics transactions, inside the vehicle.

The deputy seized the narcotics and money, and Brown was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine, Possession with Intent to Distribute Ecstasy, Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Transactions Involving Proceeds from Drug Offenses and Improper Equipment on Vehicle.

“I applaud this deputy, whose training and proactive policing resulted in a drug dealer and a large amount of drugs being taken off our streets,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “Once again we are sending the message that we will not tolerate individuals bringing drugs into our community.”

City of Bogalusa Statement on Saturday Night's Shooting

"On Saturday February 26th, many families came together and enjoyed a beautiful day. It is unfortunate that a few behaved in a violent manner. At this time there is an ongoing investigation regarding the shooting that occurred Saturday night. What we know, as of now, is that there were a number of people gathering on MLK and 4th street. There was no permit granted for this gathering.

At this time we are encouraging anyone who has information to contact the BPD at 732-3611. It is our civic duty to keep the citizens of Bogalusa safe. We need the help of the public to do this. The City of Bogalusa has now elicited the help of the parish and the state, and federal government to work with us to assure the safety of our citizens. This is a time when we request the city to come together, not spread rumors, and recognize that every citizen’s safety is our top priority. I ask that everyone understand we need your help. We need the citizens cooperation for the greater good of our community.

Please keep the City of Bogalusa in your prayers."

Man Accused of Using & Selling Meth With Children Present

On Tuesday (February 22, 2022), detectives with the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force arrested Christopher Rashad Brown, age 32 and a resident of Lee Road. Brown was charged with selling and using methamphetamine in the presence of young children. He was jailed on charges of distribution of illegal drugs and three counts of use of illegal drugs in the presence of children. His bond was set at $150,000.

He was arrested again in 2020 on two counts of distribution of illegal drugs, two counts of possession of illegal drugs with intent to distribute, obstruction of justice and traffic offenses.

“What type of person would use and sell meth in the presence of young children?” asked Sheriff Randy Seal. “I think every decent person knows the answer to that question. I am grateful to our narcotics detectives for their hard work in getting illegal drugs out of our parish.”

Another Traffic + Drugs + Firearms Arrest

Late Wednesday (February 23, 2022) evening, a Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle on Highway 21 for a motor vehicle violation. The traffic stop yielded not only a quantity of illegal drugs, but also a fully loaded revolver. The driver, Wesley Lee Eakes, age 41 and a resident of Bogalusa, was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of illegal drugs, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with a firearm present and a motor vehicle violation. He was placed in the Washington Parish Jail with his bond set at $6,000.

“Two traffic stops in the same evening yielded two pistols,” stated Sheriff Randy Seal. “There is always a risk of harm when our deputies encounter someone during the dark of night. I’m so appreciative of the hard work of our deputies who face potential danger each time they encounter a law violator. I ask all citizens of Washington Parish to cover our officers in prayer as they work daily to protect us.”

Tylertown Man Arrested in Angie / Stolen Firearm Recovered

Early this morning (Thursday, February 24, 2022), a Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy stopped a vehicle inside Angie that was traveling 80 miles per hour in a 40 miles per hour zone. When the deputy approached the vehicle, he observed the driver appeared to be under the influence of some substance due to his slurred speech and inability to focus.

After the driver exited his vehicle, he was asked if he had any weapons in the vehicle or on his person. He answered no to the question. At this time, the deputy noticed a large bulge in the driver’s pocket and removed a pistol magazine which was fully loaded with 14 rounds of .40 caliber ammunition. At that time, the driver was detained and placed in the rear seat of the patrol vehicle.

Returning to the vehicle, the deputy observed a pistol in in plain sight. The pistol, a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol was retrieved along with a quantity of illegal narcotics. When the deputy provided the serial number of the pistol to dispatch, the pistol was flagged as having been stolen in Mississippi.

The driver, Jadarius Jaronte Magee,  age 23 and a resident of Tylertown, Mississippi, was arrested and transported to the Washington Parish Jail. Magee was booked into the jail on charges of possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with a firearm present, possession of illegal drugs, speeding, driving under suspension and improper lane usage. Magee’s bond was set at $10,000.

“While decent law abiding citizens are home asleep in their beds, our deputies are patrolling our highways,” stated Sheriff Randy Seal. “One can only speculate what Magee’s intentions were during the wee hours of the morning. I certainly don’t think they were honorable. I appreciate the work of our patrol deputy in apprehending Magee and placing him in the parish jail.”

More Arrests Made by WPSO Following Investigation Into Inmate Death

As previously reported, two Washington Parish Jail inmates were arrested following the February 3, 2022 death of WPSO Jail inmate Brandon Christopher Williams, age 31 and a resident of Bogalusa. The investigation into the death of Williams was conducted by investigators from the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police.

As a result of the investigation, inmates Prentis N. Slocum, age 42 and a resident of Columbia, Mississippi, and Cameron James Roy Seal, age 21 and a resident of Washington Parish, were arrested and charged with furnishing illegal drugs to Williams who died as a result of ingesting the substances. It was determined that Slocum had smuggled the drugs into the jail by concealing them inside a body cavity. Slocum was charged with Second Degree Murder and Seal was charged with Principal to Second Degree Murder. Click here for that previous story

On February 5, 2022, another drug incident occurred in the jail involving the same two inmates plus another, Timothy Bryan Holden, age 24 and a resident of Highway 436. Slocum removed a packet containing heroin and methamphetamine from his body cavity and gave them to Seal who in turn gave some of the drugs to Holden. Video surveillance indicates Holden consumed drugs which had been furnished to him.

Corrections deputies removed all three inmates from the housing unit and conducted unclothed body searches of each. During the search of Slocum, a plastic wrapped substance was observed partially protruding from a body cavity. Slocum was transported to Riverside Medical Center where the plastic wrapped substance was medically removed. Slocum admitted the package contained heroin and methamphetamine.

Based on the continued investigation, all three inmates were criminally charged. Slocum received additional charges of possession of heroin and methamphetamine, distribution of heroin, distribution of methamphetamine and possession of contraband. His bond is set at $370,750. Seal was additionally charged with the same offenses and his bond is set at $309,000. Holden was charged with possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine and possession of contraband. His bond is set at $75,000. These arrests conclude the immediate investigation subsequent to the death of Williams.

“This is a glaring example of some of the unsavory things our corrections deputies have to deal with on a daily basis,” stated Sheriff Randy Seal. “While it is hard for decent folks to understand why and how some folks do such things, it is a reality. Our criminal investigators and State Police investigators did an excellent job on the initial investigation. Our corrections deputies did an equally excellent job, both on February 3 and 5. As I’ve said many times, our corrections deputies have a very difficult job and they do it well. They supervise an often unruly inmate population, some of whom engage in very unpleasant behavior. I commend our corrections deputies who do a remarkable job managing inmates who have no respect for honest, hard-working citizens or the law in general.”

The attack on his mother and father took place on June 20, 2017 in the early morning hours. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a residence where the defendant and his parents lived and found the defendant’s mother in the driveway with obvious injuries to her head and face and was bleeding. She directed officers to a back bedroom where the defendant was attacking her husband.

The second victim, the defendant’s father, was laying on the floor in a pool of his own blood, with Melerine crouching over his body. The victim was face down trying to prevent Melerine from grabbing the hammer that he’d wrestled out of his son’s hands. Officers observed blood across the room on the floor, bed and walls and covering the victim and the defendant. Deputy Parker later testified that it was the “bloodiest scene he’d ever seen.”

At trial, the victim/mother testified that both she and her husband were asleep when the defendant broke into their locked bedroom in the early morning hours. She was awoken by what she described as sounding like “a hammer smashing a coconut.” She saw her son continue to strike her husband in the head with a hammer. She attempted to stop him and he turned on her, striking her multiple times.

The victim/father was able to stop the defendant from striking his wife again and told her to call 9-1-1. As ADA Luke Lancaster said of the father, “he was going to save his wife.” “He was a hero.” The mother’s 15-minute 911 call was played in court, wherein she is heard pleading: "Oh, God! Get somebody here quick. My son just went bonkers on us. Oh, God! My son is going nuts on us. Oh, hurry, please! Oh, God! Just get somebody here!"

Both victims testified that the night before, the defendant made comments to them indicating that he was fostering some sort of anger/resentment toward them, and that he maybe was on drugs. The father testified that his son in his rage told them that he was Michael the Archangel and to “prepare their souls for heaven.”

Attorneys for the defense asked the jury to find him guilty of the lesser charge of Aggravated battery, arguing that he did not have the “specific intent to kill” them, because he was likely impaired by drugs and that there were more lethal weapons he could have used. ADA Luke Lancaster argued that “there is a line and he didn’t just cross that line, he was light years across it.”

ADA Blake Peters in closing stated that, although there were more lethal weapons in the home, the defendant chose to use a more “enjoyable, intimate, less quick” method of murder and that he was very much in control and not impaired. Peters told the jury, “He’s been coddled his entire life, has been asserting excuses his entire life, but you can now hold him accountable.”

The jury deliberated about 40 minutes before unanimously voting “guilty” on both counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Impaired Driver Arrested in Tangipahoa Fatal Head-On Crash

This morning (February 18, 2022), shortly after 3:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 22 west of I-55 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 73-year-old William Deal, Jr. of Ponchatoula.

The initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred as 24-year-old Kane Burns of Ponchatoula was traveling westbound on LA Hwy 22 in a 2004 Jeep Wrangler. At the same time, Deal Jr. was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 22 in a 2015 Toyota Tacoma. The preliminary findings revealed Burns crossed the centerline into the opposing lane, which resulted in the Jeep striking the Toyota head-on.

Deal Jr. was unrestrained at the time of the crash; and sustained serious injuries. Deal Jr. was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Impairment is unknown on the part of Deal Jr., but a routine toxicology sample was obtained from him and will be submitted for analysis. Burns was properly restrained at the time of the crash and sustained moderate injuries.

Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash on the part of Burns. Troopers arrested and booked Burns at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail for Vehicular Homicide, DWI (2nd Offense), and Driving Left of Center. A toxicology sample was obtained from Burns and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Far too often, Troopers see the tragic consequences of preventable motor vehicle crashes. Troopers urge motorists to have a plan in place before consuming alcohol as it can impair visual ability, diminish fine motor skills, and decrease reaction times. Please choose never to drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver, and always buckle up. The conversation you have could make all the difference.

Kentwood Man Charged with Defrauding Employer & Filing False Taxes

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced the filing of a two-count bill of information charging Michael J. Doll, age 46 and of Kentwood, with wire fraud and filing false federal tax returns. The charges were filed on Friday, February 11, 2022. U.S. District Judge Wendy B. Vitter will preside over the case.

According to court documents, Goll was the New Orleans branch manager of Company A and from January 2013 through September 2017, defrauded the company of approximately $549,667.39. Goll is alleged to have executed the scheme by sending Company A false invoices from shell companies that he had created, when in fact the work was either done by Company A’s own employees or the work was not done at all. As part of the scheme, Goll had a contractor who did personal work for Goll inflate his bills to Company A to cover the work done for Goll. Goll justified the overbilling by telling the contractor that he planned on buying Company A in the future, although Goll never did. Moreover, the bill of information alleges that Goll filed false federal tax returns for 2017 claiming a negative income of $22,102.00, when in fact his income for 2017 was $325,232.00.

For wire fraud, Doll faces maximum penalties of 20 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.00. For filing false federal tax returns, Doll faces maximum penalties of 3 years in prison, up to one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $100,000.00. Each count also carries a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that a bill of information is merely an accusation and that the guilt of a defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew R. Payne is in charge of the prosecution.

32 Year-Old Slidell Man Facing 198 Years for Armed Robberies

District Attorney Warren Montgomery reports that on February 17, 2022, Don Patrick Barrington, Jr., age 32 and of Slidell, was found guilty by a jury of 2 counts of Armed Robbery.

Before midnight on December 25, 2017, the Slidell Police Department was dispatched to an Exxon gas station. The cashier/victim stated that a white male wearing a black skull cap, gray long sleeve sweat shirt, black pants and black gloves had approached her behind the counter with a hunting knife, ordered her to open the register, took approximately $77.00 and fled.

About 30 minutes later, officers were dispatched to a Shell station in Slidell. The cashier/victim stated that a white male, fitting the same description, entered the gas station with a weapon in his hand and told her “I need the money out of the register.” The armed robber attempted to pry open the register but was unsuccessful. He then took off his right-hand glove and scanned a can of Coke to conduct a transaction to open the register. He took approximately $275.00 cash and fled.

Police were able to retrieve video footage from both locations and posted clips of the video on social media. Members of the public contacted law enforcement and identified the defendant as the perpetrator. Police successfully lifted a fingerprint from the Coke can and the print was later matched to the defendant.

Police later located the defendant and arrested him. A search of the defendant’s motel room revealed the knife and clothing used during the robberies.

Counsel for defendant claimed that his client did not do it, and that he was misidentified. The State argued that there was too much evidence to the contrary.

The District Attorney expressed his thanks to the Slidell Police Department. Judge William H. Burris presided over the case. Assistant District Attorney Iain Dover presented the case to the jury.

Barrington is facing up to 99 years on each count. His sentencing is May 19, 2022.
