Parish Animal Shelter Reports on Parvo Outbreak

Washington Parish Animal Shelter Manager Kelsey Knight has advised that “Due to the recent outbreak of an unknown strain of Parvo virus, Washington Parish Shelters will have to temporarily stop the intake of all dogs under the age of 2 years. We are also recommending if you have a dog(s) under the age of 2 that has not been vaccinated in the past six months, to have your pet(s) vaccinated. While Washington Parish has yet to have a case in a shelter, we must stay vigilant and protect the animals as best as we can.”

Regarding cleaning, Knight advised that “Parvo Virus is a hard to protect from and is very costly to cure and it can live in the environment for over a year and cannot be killed by normal household cleaners. If you have an animal outbreak with parvo, please keep all other pets away from any areas where that animal may have defecated. The best cleaning method is to use a bleach product, please let it sit on the surface for at least 5 minutes before wiping away; also, make sure that any cleaners are completely rinsed as bleach can be an irritant.”

Symptoms include vomiting, bloody stool, and lethargy.
