Covington Police Investigating Stabbing

In the early morning hours of November 10, 2021, Officers with the Covington Police Department responded near the intersection of N. Taylor Street and Schoultz Drive and found a male subject laying in the street, suffering from multiple stab wounds to the torso area. Aid was immediately rendered to the victim until Covington Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance Service arrived on scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. This condition is considered stable at this time.

CPD's Criminal Investigations Division has taken over the investigation and CPD is asking the public to contact the Covington Police Department if they have any information relative to this stabbing by calling 985-892-8500.

18-year-old Covington Man Arrested on Rape Charges

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested an 18-year-old Ryheim Ross of Covington on rape charges.  Detectives have identified three victims, ranging in age from 11 to 13, which the subject targeted through mutual acquaintances and via the popular social media application – Snapchat.

In November 2020, the STPSO Special Victims Unit Detectives began an investigation of the sexual assault of an 11-year-old. As part of that investigation, in February 2021, detectives secured a warrant for and arrested Ross on one count of First Degree Rape/Victim under 13 years of age. It was during this investigation, however, that detectives learned of two additional victims, ages 12 and 13 at the time of the crime. Ross was rebooked in March 2021 on one count of First Degree Rape/Victim under 13 years of age in connection with the 12-year-old victim and for one count First Degree Rape in connection with the 13-year-old victim.

While interviewing witnesses during their investigation, detectives also uncovered evidence which led to Ross being booked on one count of Domestic Abuse Battery in March 2021 in connection with injuries he caused to his live-in adult girlfriend.

Given the nature of the crimes and the fact that Ross was targeting his victims via mutual acquaintances and thru social media, detectives have reason to believe there may possibly be more victims out there. If you, your child or someone you know may be a victim of Ross, please call Sergeant Ryan Suhre at (985) 726-7839.

"It is utterly appalling that this suspect preyed on young children using Snapchat and mutual acquaintances! When this happens in our community, those committing such heinous acts will be apprehended and charged accordingly," Sheriff Smith said. “Please be vigilant and if you have young children using social media, carefully monitor their content to protect them from being victimized."

Franklinton Police Reports Man Found Deceased

In a statement released today (November 10, 2021), the Franklinton Police Department advises that FPD “typically does not publicly release information for suicides, overdose or natural deaths.” However, their statement is being released due to inquiries by residents. Information from other sources is that a body was found in a burned-out residence on Bickham Street.

FPD reports that a 50 year-old male's body was discovered November 5, 2021. Detectives were informed the deceased had recently found out his cancer had returned. In the vicinity of his body, investigators found empty alcohol and prescription bottles.

FPD further reports that preliminary information from the coroner indicates no foul play is suspected, which is consistent with evidence recovered at the scene which would indicate a crime was not committed. The subject had no external trauma; however, the autopsy revealed significant coronary damage. Detectives are currently awaiting a toxicology report and an official cause of death from the coroner.

Bogalusa Police Request Public's Help in Two Murders

Detectives with the Bogalusa Police Department are currently investigating two unsolved recent murders, and are requesting the help of the public to solve these murders.

On August 8, 2021, 21 year-old Typolia Peters, Jr. was shot and killed in the Highland Park Housing Project, as he was walking outside in the housing development. Detectives have gotten information from anonymous tipsters and have developed suspects in the shooting of Peters; however, anonymous tips are not enough to establish probable cause to make an arrest. Detectives are asking for any assistance from the public, in the form of witnesses, or statements given with viable information that can lead to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the death of Peters.

Fifteen days after the murder of Typolia Peters, shots rang out again, and this time  claimed the life of 18 year-old Aaron Brown. Brown was murdered on the corner of Dan Street at the intersection of Hickory Avenue on August 23, 2021. Brown had only been off the school bus a short period of time before he was gunned down. As in the murder of Typolia Peters, Jr., detectives have received a good deal of anonymous tipster information, which has led to suspects being developed, but anonymous information will not establish probable cause for an arrest. Detectives need viable information or a witness to come forward, to make an arrest of the person or persons responsible for the death of Brown.

The press release from the Bogalusa Police Department states “Investigating Detectives understand the frustration of the public and fear of retaliation which comes with doing the right thing and coming forward with information. Detectives will do everything possible to protect the identity of any witnesses in either murder, in order to protect them from the threat of retaliation. Detectives will withhold their name from any written reports that may get into the hands of the perpetrators, through their attorneys, and conduct interviews in a covert way to make any witness comfortable to speak with officers.

These acts of violence are senseless and will continue and escalate over time if we as citizens don’t take a stand and demand that these shootings cease. This stand includes doing the right thing and giving any viable information that a person may have to law enforcement, so these monsters can be gotten off the streets before another life is claimed.

If you have any information that could lead to the arrest of one of these shooters, or in any crime that has been committed in our city, PLEASE do what’s right and tell an officer. You may also use Crime Stoppers by calling 504-822-1111, and remain anonymous. Remember that information provided must lead to an arrest to qualify for a reward. If you wish, you may leave your information on the BPD tip line, by dialing 985-732-6238 and pressing option 9. If you leave your name and telephone number, a detective will call you back, and YOUR IDENTITY WILL BE PROTECTED.”

Bogalusa Police Updates Charges in Murder of Dominique James

On November 10, 2021, Derek Moss Jr. was charged with the Second Degree Murder of Dominique James and Juan Keys was charged as an Accessory After the Fact in the murder. Both Moss and Keys were already incarcerated in the Washington Parish Jail on Obstruction of Justice charges related to the disappearance and murder of Dominique James.

Click here for several previous related stories

After an eighteen month investigation into the May 3, 2020 disappearance and murder of Dominique James, detectives with the Bogalusa Police Department collected evidence that led to the establishment of probable cause for the arrest of Moss in the Shooting Death of James. Likewise, evidence led to probable cause for the arrest of Juan Keys as an Accessory After the Fact in the Murder of James. Both Moss and Keys were previously charged in the matter, with Obstruction of Justice, pending further investigation, for their part in the disposal of the body of Dominique James in a heavily wooded area west of Bogalusa.

The team of Detectives with the Bogalusa Police Department, have worked tirelessly to gather as much information and evidence in this case as possible, to award closure and justice for the family of Dominique James. This matter, which remains open for further evidence, will now be referred to District Attorney Warren Montgomery’s office for prosecution. Derek Moss, Jr., who is already a multiple convicted felony offender, if convicted of the Second Degree Murder of James, faces a life sentence without benefit of parole.

Slidell Man Facing Mandatory 10 Years to Life After Guilty Plea to Drug Offense

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced today that Kendrick Demourelle, age 40 and a resident of Slidell, pled guilty on November 2, 2021 to conspiring to distribute a kilogram or more of heroin, five kilograms or more of cocaine, and 280 grams or more of crack cocaine. According to court records, Demourelle and four others, Joseph Brown, Lionel Cooley, Blake Monroe, and Kevin Gray, conspired to sell illegal narcotics in New Orleans. A portable safe being moved from Demourelle's stash house during a court-approved search contained nearly one kilogram of heroin. A repossessed GMC Sierra pickup truck used by Cooley contained nearly two kilograms of cocaine and 430 grams of crack. More than 400 grams of heroin, 125 grams of cocaine, a kilo press, and other drug paraphernalia were seized in Gray’s home in Chalmette during a court-authorized search.

The evidence against Demourelle includes the seizure of more than $50,000 and firearms found in his Denali truck after he sold two kilograms of cocaine to Cooley.

U.S. District Judge Wendy Vitter will sentence Demourelle on February 15, 2022.

U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Hammond Police Department, New Orleans Police Department, and Slidell Police Department in investigating this matter.  Assistant United States Attorney David Howard Sinkman is in charge of the prosecution.

Former Trooper Sentenced to 210 Months for Sex Crime

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Jason Boyet, age 42 and a resident of Ponchatoula and a former trooper with the Louisiana State Police, was sentenced on November 3, 2021 to 210 months imprisonment by United States District Judge Sarah Vance.  Boyet previously pleaded guilty to a one-count Bill of Information charging him with distribution of images depicting the sexual exploitation of children, including children as young as three (3) years old. As part of his sentence, Boyet will also be obligated to serve a period of five (5) years of supervised release after his term of imprisonment, register as a sex offender, and pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee. Judge Vance scheduled a restitution hearing for February 2, 2022.

According to court documents, in about February 2020, a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation operating in an undercover capacity in the State of Texas accessed a chat room within an instant messaging mobile application known to be a haven for purveyors of digital files depicting the sexual victimization of children.  The Agent was introduced to an individual, subsequently determined to be Boyet, who distributed to him sexually suggestive and sexually explicit photographs of minors, including a prepubescent female, over whom Boyet claimed to have custody and control.

On February 12, 2020, special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed a federal search warrant at Boyet's residence.  Based on a voluntarily interview with Boyet and a review of digital evidence seized during the execution of the search warrant, law enforcement authorities confirmed that Boyet took sexually explicit images of the victim at his residence using his Apple iPhone XR on at least three dates between December 19, 2019, and February 11, 2020, some of which he distributed to third parties as described above.  Agents also confirmed that Boyet accessed a link to an online file storage account containing numerous videos depicting the sexual victimization of children and, further, received at least 151 images and 195 videos depicting children as young as approximately one (1) year old engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Bogalusa Rapper Known As JayDaYoungun Faces Federal Charges

Following his October 30, 2021 arrest by the Bogalusa Police Department, Javorius Tykies Scott, age 23 and a resident of Avenue I in Bogalusa, was held in the Washington Parish Jail on multiple charges including two counts of possession of illegal drugs, possession of illegal drugs with a weapon present, illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor, obstruction of justice, child desertion, contempt of court, having a switched license plate, second offense child restraint violation and no proof of insurance.

The October 30th arrest follows an incident on August 20, 2021 when Scott was observed driving in a reckless manner in Bogalusa at a high speed with the passenger door of his car open. Once the vehicle yielded to a Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office unit, it was discovered that Scott had two passengers in his vehicle. One was an adult female while the other was an infant sitting unrestrained on the lap of the female. Scott was cited for careless operation of a vehicle, no child restraint and driving with a suspended driver’s license. He was issued a summons arrest to appear in court to answer the charges.

Scott, known as rapper JayDaYoungun, has three previously reported arrests. In April 2020, the Newnan, Georgia Times-Herald newspaper reported Scott was arrested on April 21, 2020 in Coweta County, Georgia. The newspaper reported Scott and other occupants of a rental property were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, narcotics possession and tampering with evidence. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office reported several bottles of codeine cough syrup and several oxycodone pills were also found, along with several firearms and a quantity of cash. Click here for our related story

According to the Times-Herald, Scott was previously arrested in Harris County, Texas, on a family abuse warrant, accused of striking a pregnant woman. He was reportedly apprehended by police after he was found hiding in the attic of a home. During the arrest, officers seized $24,000 in cash along with oxycodone, promethazine and several firearms where they found Scott hiding.

WVUE television, a New Orleans station, reported on September 20, 2021, that Scott had been arrested on September 16, 2021 by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office on charges of accessory to second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. The station reported Scott was released after posting a $175,000 bond. The television station also referenced the previous arrests in Texas and Georgia as well as a 2019 arrest in Gadsden County, Florida, on drug charges.

On November 4, 2021, after posting bond for his release in Washington Parish, Scott was retained in custody for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. ATF officers traveled to Washington Parish on November 4, 2021 and took custody of Scott and transferred him to a federal detention facility where he will face federal charges.

In September, 2021, the Sheriff’s Office investigated another rape allegation made against Applewhite. He was again arrested for Forcible Rape, and was again booked and bonded from the Parish Jail.

She has since been transported to Bogalusa and arrested, and is awaiting transport to the Parish Jail.
