Slidell Man Jailed on Pornography Charges / AG Asks Public's Assistance in Ongoing Investigation

Attorney General Jeff Landry's Cyber Crime Unit has arrested Shaun Dennis, age 25 and of Slidell, on 39 counts of possession of Pornography Involving Juveniles Under the Age of 13 and 10 counts of producing Pornography Involving Juveniles Under the Age of 13. The arrest was a result of a joint investigation between the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office. 

Today the Attorney General is asking the public for their assistance in this ongoing investigation. “I encourage anyone with information regarding Mr. Dennis to call my Cyber Crime Unit toll-free at 1-800-256-4506; callers may remain anonymous,” said Attorney General Landry. “As we continue to work on this case, my office remains committed to doing all we can to protect women and children and to hold predators accountable.” 

Dennis was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on August 4, 2022. Bond has been set at $1,500,000.00.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Loranger Man Killed in Tangipahoa Parish Crash

Saturday (August 6, 2022P night shortly after 11:30 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 1054 near Clements Road in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 22-year-old Triston Pennington of Loranger.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Pennington was southbound on LA Hwy 1054 in a 2009 Toyota Yaris. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota ran off the road to the right and struck a cement culvert. 

Pennington was unrestrained and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Pennington was pronounced deceased on the scene. As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was obtained from the driver for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troop L has investigated 4 crashes involving fatalities this weekend. Of the four fatalities, three were not properly restrained. Statistics show that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Properly wearing your seat belt is one of the most effective ways to save your life and reduce injuries in crashes. 

One Dead in Crash Near Kentwood

Saturday (August 6, 2022) night shortly after 11:10 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 1054 near North River Road in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 33-year-old Jeremiah Sims of Hammond.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Sims was westbound on LA Hwy 1054 in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet ran off the road to the right and struck a tree. 

Sims was unrestrained and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Sims was pronounced deceased on the scene. As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was obtained from the driver for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Passenger Killed in St. Tammany Parish Crash

Shortly after 4:30 a.m. Saturday (August 6, 2022), Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 in Slidell. The crash claimed the life of 20-year-old Athuris Rapp of Gulfport, Mississippi.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as a 2021 Toyota Corrolla, driven by 20-year-old Reubon Kelly of Gulfport, Mississippi was eastbound on Interstate 10. At the same time, a 2003 Mack dump truck was also eastbound on Interstate 10. For reasons still under investigation, the Corrolla struck the rear of the Mack dump truck. 

Rapp was a backseat passenger in the Corrolla and was unrestrained at the time of the crash. Rapp sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Kelly and two other passengers sustained moderate injuries due to the crash. Kelly and one passenger were properly restrained and the other passenger was not. Kelly and the two other passengers were all transported to local hospitals. The driver of the Mack was properly restrained and was not injured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Driver Killed in Tangipahoa Parish Crash Near Roseland

On Friday (August 5, 2022) night shortly after 11:55 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 55 near LA Hwy 1048 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of an unidentified driver.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as a 2013 GMC Yukon was southbound on Interstate 55. For reasons still under investigation, the GMC traveled off of the roadway to the right and struck a tree. Shortly after striking the tree, the GMC caught fire and became fully engulfed. 

The driver was properly restrained at the time of the crash, but sustained fatal injuries. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The passenger of the GMC sustained serious injuries; restraint use is unknown at this time. The passenger was transported to a local hospital. As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was obtained from the driver for analysis. 

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued or distracted, follow all traffic laws and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.

Slidell Police High-Speed Chase of Off-Road Vehicle – One Officer Injured – Suspect Sought

Update (at 4:12 PM on August 4, 2022): 14 Year-Old Arrested

Slidell Police have arrested a 14-year-old juvenile from Slidell. SPD reports that after posting a photograph of the ATV on social media, several tips led officers to a residence in the Oak Harbor area. The suspect was identified late Wednesday night, and warrants were issued for his arrest. Around 3:00 PM this afternoon, the juvenile was placed under arrest and charged with:

▪️Aggravated Obstruction of a Highway

▪️Reckless Operation of an Off-Road Vehicle

▪️Negligent Injuring

▪️Operating an Off-Road Vehicle on a Public Roadway.

Original Story

Slidell Police are on the search for a suspect after they led officers on an early Wednesday (August 3, 2022) evening high-speed chase, leaving one officer injured. Shortly after 5:30pm, a Slidell Police detective observed a blue Can-Am Maverick X3 (an off-road ATV) driving recklessly though the busy Fremaux Town Center by running vehicles off the road and traveling at speeds upwards of 80 miles per hour. As officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, leading multiple Slidell Police officers on a chase through the city. The suspect eluded officers by taking his vehicle off-road (along a levee near Oak Harbor) and cut through to Interstate 10…where officers ultimately lost sight of the off-road vehicle. During the chase, an officer was involved in a crash, resulting in the officer having to go to a local hospital. The extent of the officer’s injuries were not immediately available at the time of this release; however, are minor in nature and not life threatening.

Slidell Police are asking for your help with identifying the suspect. He is described to be a light skinned, African American male, in his late teens – early 20’s, with short dreadlock style hair. Slidell Police believe the suspect lives in the Slidell area.

Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal says, “During the last several months, we've had several issues with these types of vehicles driving reckless around our city, causing issues, and putting innocent lives in danger. We ARE NOT going to tolerate it here. I can assure you we will find this individual, and he will face some very serious charges. And for anyone else who thinks they are going to be copycats and cause issues with these off-road vehicles, let me be the first to tell you that we will have zero-tolerance. Expect to go to jail and have your vehicle impounded. Period.”

The Washington Parish Library welcomed a new Board Member on July 21, 2022. Ms. Penny Moses was sworn in by Judge David Merlin Duke at the Bogalusa Branch that evening, taking the position held by Mrs. Luella Jackson, a deeply respected and long-time member of the Library Board. 

The Library Board also honored Mrs. Luella Jackson at the meeting. Members of the Board and public were given an opportunity to talk about Mrs. Jackson, her contribution to the community, and how much she meant to us all. Mrs. Jackson is missed deeply by the Angie community, library staff, and the Library Board. Ms. Moses shared her memories of Mrs. Jackson and explained how honored she was to be following in Mrs. Jackson’s footsteps on the Board.

Man Gets 55 Years in Prison for Armed Robbery, Carjacking, & More in Slidell

District Attorney Warren Montgomery reports that on Monday (August 1, 2022), Arsenio Aaron Wells, age 32 and of New Orleans, pled guilty as charged prior to his trial for crimes he committed in Slidell in December of 2021 and was adjudicated as a habitual offender.

On Tuesday August 2, 2022, Wells was sentenced by District Judge Scott Gardner to 55 years in prison for armed robbery, 40 years for carjacking and 20 years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The court ordered the sentences to run concurrent with each other for a total of 55 years in prison without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence. The Defendant was previously convicted on three counts of attempted armed robbery in New Orleans.

On Thursday, December 23, 2021, Slidell Police responded to a carjacking at a Slidell gas station. Officers received a description of the vehicle, the license plate number and a description of the perpetrator. The victim stated that he was starting to pump gas when he was approached by a black male who asked him for the time and then pointed a gun at him and told him to step away from the car. He complied and the perpetrator, later identified as Wells, got into the driver’s seat and sped away, getting on I-10 heading toward New Orleans. Slidell officers, assisted by Louisiana State Police and the New Orleans Police Department, flooded I-10 in the area of the Twin Spans and into Orleans Parish. Shortly thereafter, Slidell Police Officer Garrett Colgan located Wells operating the victim’s vehicle near the Bullard Ave/I-10 exit. Wells fled from Officer Colgan and led officers on a dangerous, high-speed chase that ended with Wells crashing the stolen car. Wells then fled from officers on foot but was apprehended after a brief search of the area.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Carolyn Chkautovich and Luke Lancaster.

Former Postal Employee of Bogalusa Pleads Guilty to Stealing Items From the Mail

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Patrick Ezell, age 51 and of Bogalusa, pleaded guilty on August 2, 2022 before the Honorable Wendy B. Vitter, U.S. District Judge, Eastern District of Louisiana, to stealing items from the mail he was entrusted to deliver as a postal employee. Sentencing is set for November 1, 2022.

According to documents filed in federal court, Patrick Ezell was employed by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Bogalusa when he was apprehended stealing items from the mail he was entrusted to deliver for the U.S. Postal Service.

The maximum penalty for the offense is up to five years imprisonment and/or  up to a fine of $250,000 or the greater of twice the gross gain to the defendant or twice the gross loss to the victim followed by up to three years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of one hundred dollars.  

U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Richard R. Pickens, II is in charge of the prosecution.

Another JUDE (Juvenile Underage Drinking Enforcement) Operation in Washington Parish/One Business Cited for 2nd Offense

In late May of 2022, four Washington Parish businesses were cited by the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office for selling alcohol to juveniles. Fifteen area businesses were visited as part of a statewide effort known as JUDE (Juvenile Underage Drinking Enforcement). A subsequent JUDE operation on July 1, 2022 found four additional businesses which sold alcohol to a minor.

On July 29, 2022, the Sheriff’s Office once again conducted a JUDE operation by using a juvenile to attempt to buy alcohol at twenty-three parish business establishments. Only one parish business sold alcohol to a juvenile on July 29. A clerk at Chevron on Highway 21 in Varnado was cited for selling to an underage customer. This was the second offense for that business in a period of less than three months, with the first citation being issued in late May.

Four parish businesses which previously sold alcohol to a juvenile were revisited during the July 29 operation. Those four businesses requested proper identification and refused to sell alcohol to the juvenile.

“Out of twenty-three businesses visited on July 29, only one sold alcohol to a minor,” stated Sheriff Randy Seal. “While that is a low percentage, it is still one too many. The vast majority of parish business establishments which are licensed to sell alcohol do so in a responsible manner. I congratulate them and their clerks for demonstrating integrity and honesty.”

GREETINGS TO THE TOWN OF FRANKLINTON:

As Mayor of our town, I have had increased concerns about the recent gun violence involving the youth of our community. In spite of these misguided actions, our town is truly blessed that no lives have been lost as a result of these shootings. Security efforts have been increased and we are seeking the help of our parents as well as those who are concerned about our youth.

Parents, please try to be aware of the location of you children (youth) at all times. Please keep all guns secure that are in your home. Encourage your children to avoid situations and people that could result into dangerous involvement. Let your children know that they can rely on you for guidance and if they are faced with out of control situations.

If you need the advice of our local authorities, please contact our office and we will direct you to the proper authorities. We are here for support. Our police department can be reach 24 hours a day, please do not hesitate to call.

Let's work together for the well being of our youth and community.

Details Released on 3 Recent Shootings in Franklinton

Franklinton Police Chief Justin Brown has confirmed that three shootings have occurred recently in Franklinton.

The first shooting occurred at the Greenlaw Event Center on July 24, 2022 at around 12:21 AM. The gunshot victim in the case was identified as 44 year-old Kenyatta Scott while seeking treatment at Our Lady of Angels Hospital in Bogalusa after being shot again in Bogalusa a few days later. According witnesses, Scott was shot inside the event center as a result of two other subjects fighting and Scott is not believed to have been the intended target. The identity of the shooter has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing. 

The second shooting occurred near the Fairgrounds Apartments on July 25, 2022 at around 4:53 PM. No one was injured. 24 year-old Malik McClain was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a firearm after a physical altercation took place with another individual. McClain was turned over to the Washington Parish Jail pending bond.  

The third shooting occurred at the Franklinton Youth Football Field in the 1500 block of Bene Street on July 28, 2022 around 8:22 PM. The shooting followed a physical altercation. No victims have been identified or reported in the case. Detectives have identified potential suspects in the case. However, without a victim or complainant, no arrests have been made.

Craig Hartzog (40 year-old W/M with Bogalusa, La. address) was booked on the charges of Simple Battery, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (3rd Offense), and Contempt of Court by the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office. Bond set at $3250.00.

Bogalusa Police Reports Death of 14 Year-Old Gunshot Victim

The Bogalusa Police Department reports this morning (August 2, 2022) that a 14 year-old male victim of a shooting has died. BPD detectives are working the death as a homicide and a result of a shooting on June 26, 2022 in the area of Main Street and Marshall Richardson Road.

When BPD responded to the area on Sunday, June 26, 2022 in reference to shots fired, they found no victims on the scene. Officers searched the area and located nine shell casings from a 9mm. BPD then received a call form Our Lady of the Angels Hospital, advising of a gunshot victim in the Emergency Room. Officers responded to the hospital and learned that a male victim, 14 years of age, had been brought to the Emergency Room with a gunshot wound to the neck. A passerby told officers that they saw the victim lying on the side of the roadway, stopped to check on him, and brought him to the hospital upon finding he was injured. The victim was in critical condition and was transported to a trauma center that night. He has been on life support since then. On Sunday (July 31, 2022) night, the victim was taken off of life support and died from his injury.

BPD reports that details on what happened that night are few, no witnesses to the shooting have come forward, and there is little evidence at this time. Detectives are asking if anyone knows anything about the shooting to please come forward. The Detective Division phone number is (985) 732-6238. Callers may remain anonymous.

Louisiana legislative Auditor Report Re: Washington Parish Fire Protection District No. 7

Investigative auditors found the district’s secretary provided inaccurate and incomplete information to the Louisiana Workforce Commission and collected COVID-19 pandemic unemployment benefits despite continuing to work for the district. She received a total of $28,490 in benefits between April 2020 and August 2021. In addition, the president and the secretary of the fire district board knew the district secretary had applied for and received the benefits while continuing to work for the district. 

Auditors also found that a former employee contracted with the fire district to provide landscaping services during the time he was working for the district. The district paid $11,687 to the company between April 2018 and November 2020 for services. State ethics laws prohibit public servants from contracting with and/or participating in transactions involving their governmental entity.

Former State Senator Karen Carter Peterson Pleads Guilty to Charges in Federal Court

The  United States  Attorney’s Office  announced that former Louisiana State Senator and Chair of State Political Party “A”, Karen Carter Peterson, age 52 and from New Orleans, pleaded guilty as charged today (August 1, 2022) to wire fraud.

The Press Release indicates that Peterson solicited campaign donations that were diverted to her personal benefit. Additionally, as Chair of her State Political Party, Peterson wrongfully chose entities operated by her associates to provide campaign-related services to the Party. In reality, the entities provided provided either no or minimal services for the State Political Party  and the entities were directed to remit a portion of the funds to Peterson. 

Peterson faces a maximum term of twenty (20) years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000.00, up to three (3) years of supervised release after imprisonment, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.  Sentencing before Judge Vance has been scheduled for December 7, 2022.

Kentwood Shooting Leaves One Dead

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office Chief Jimmy Travis reports the death of 39 year-old Julius White  of Kentwood and that White was shot and killed during a disturbance between he and his ex-girlfriend, 33 year-old Hannah Pittman.

On July 24, 2022, deputies responded to a residence on Cecil P Road in Kentwood for a disturbance where shots had been fired. Deputies located Julius White laying at the back door of the residence with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. After extensive life-saving measures were taken by medical personnel, White succumbed to his injuries. 

It was learned during the investigation that Pittman shot White during an argument. Pittman had remained on-scene and fully cooperated throughout the investigation. Pittman was taken into custody and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on one count of Negligent Homicide and one count of Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

All persons accused of a crime are innocent until proven guilty.

One Killed, Five Injured in Washington Parish Crash

Shortly after 10:45 pm on Saturday (July 30, 2022), Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 21 near Little Southern Village Road in Washington Parish. The crash claimed the life of 35-year-old Kevin Christensen of Mandeville. 

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Christensen was traveling in the wrong direction in the southbound lanes of LA Hwy 21 and crashed head-on into a Jeep. After impact, the Jeep overturned.

Christensen was not properly restrained at the time of the crash and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Jeep was properly restrained, but sustained serious injuries. There were four other occupants in the Jeep, each of whom were properly restrained and sustained minor to moderate injuries. All occupants of the Jeep were transported to a local hospital. Impairment is unknown and routine toxicology results are pending for both drivers. This crash remains under investigation.

Covington Police Arrest 21 Year-Old with Stolen Firearm, Drugs, and Semi-Auto Rifle

Covington Police Chief Ferrell advises that last Friday (July 29, 2022), CPD officers responded to a disturbance in the 300 block of W. 33rd Ave in reference to two male subjects having an altercation. 

It was determined that 21 year-old Quantae Smith of Covington was in possession of a stolen firearm, 64 grams of marijuana, and an SKS semi-automatic long rifle in the presence of the marijuana. Smith was arrested and taken to the St. Tammany Parish Jail.

Chief Ferrell commended the officers for their quick response and for removing two more illegally possessed firearms off of the streets of Covington. 

Parish Government Selling 28.228 Acres of Breedlove Farm Property

The Washington Parish Government is accepting sealed bids on 28.228 acres (by survey) on immovable property located in Section 32, Township 3 South, Range 12 East, Washington Parish, located in the Plainview area on S. Choctaw Road, with all improvements located thereon. The property will be sold "AS IS" with waiver of redhibition. This property was a portion of property known as the Breedlove Farm.  Prospective bidders may request appropriate bid forms, including a copy of the survey plat can be obtained by contacting the Donna Graham at 985.839.7825 and to also request a tour of the property. 

Bids will be by sealed bids on or before August 26, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. The property shall be sold to the highest bidder. The act of sale shall be cash at the time of closing with all closing costs to be paid by the purchaser.  

The Washington Parish Government reserves the right to reject any and all bids. The above is in accordance with Code of Federal Regulations 2 CFR 200, Part .311(c) and subject to the disposition instructions of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Franklinton Police Short on Staff

The Franklinton Police Department has recently advertised for seven (7) open full-time positions that include positions for Dispatch (1), POST Certified School Resource Officer (1), and Post Certified Patrol Officer (5). 

Law Enforcement recruiting and retention is down nationwide and Chief Justin Brown reports that the Franklinton Police Department is especially feeling the effects. Chief Brown stated, “This number accounts for 50% of our patrol division. Our officers, detectives and dispatchers are working a significant amount of overtime just to ensure the shifts are properly filled. Over a sustained period of time, as it has been, this leads to fatigue. Operating in this manner is dangerous in the law enforcement career field.”

Chief Brown added that attempts are being made to assess the current pay structure in an effort to increase recruitment as well as retention.
