Three Arrested in Attempted Burglary of Rapture Firearms in Loranger

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office's Chief Jimmy Travis reports the arrest of three subjects following a Wednesday (May 11, 2023) early morning attempt to burglarize a Loranger business, Rapture Firearms on Harvest Lane in Loranger.

Just after midnight, deputies responded to Rapture Firearms after the owner received security camera motion alerts on his mobile phone. Be Vigilant During Termite Season

Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., reminds property owners to remain vigilant for termites during late spring and into the coming summer months.

With Louisiana’s warm and wet climate this time of year, termites can get especially active as they constantly seek out new food sources.

“Turning off outside lights at night or using yellow bulbs can help you avoid attracting swarming termites,” says Commissioner Strain. “However, there are also other proactive measures you can take on a regular basis to protect your property from the destruction of termites.”

  • Fix any leaks in the roof, pipes, and outside faucets on your home.
  • Repair rotting wood on the fascia, soffit, and exterior wood surfaces.
  • Remove any wood lying under or around your home, and store firewood away from your home.
  • Examine your home’s slab line and the base of piers for signs of termites.
  • Clean the gutters on your home and repair sections that may be damaged.
  • Trim tree limbs and vines that may be growing on your home.
  • Drain water away from the slab or under your home; do not let it pool.

Treatments and annual inspections by a licensed, insured, and bonded pest control company are a good termite preventative. Between professional inspections, property owners can also look for mud tubes on slabs, piers, or walls; pinholes in wallboards; softness in flooring; or blisters in paint or wallpaper.

To find out which companies are certified and licensed to perform termite-related services, consumers can contact the LDAF at 225-925-4578, visit the LDAF website at www.ldaf.la.gov

Two From Washington Parish Die in Tuesday Crash

Early Tuesday (May 9, 2023) morning, shortly after 12:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA 16 east near Sunlight Road in Washington Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the lives of 43-year-old Robin Polk of Franklinton and 20-year-old Isabella Perez of Angie.

The initial investigation revealed that Polk was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima headed west on LA 16.  At the same time, a 2013 BMW Mini Cooper driven by Perez, was headed east on LA 16.  For reasons still being investigated, Polk crossed the center line, entered the eastbound lane, and struck the Mini Cooper head-on.

Polk, who was not restrained at the time of the crash, succumbed to her injuries at the scene.  Perez also suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene.  Restraint use is unknown for Perez.  As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was obtained from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Nearly half of the fatal crashes in Louisiana are caused by impaired drivers.  Alcohol and other drugs affect your visual ability, fine motor skills, and reaction times.  Drivers should have a plan for a safe ride home before consuming any alcohol and/or drugs because if you feel different, you drive different.  Additionally, taking just 3 seconds to buckle up can greatly increase your chances of surviving a crash.  Drivers should ensure that all occupants are properly restrained in all seating positions, day or night.

Hammond 18 Year-Old Arrested for Carjacking and Murder of Arkansas Man

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office reports the arrest of 18 year-old Ladarrius Evans of Hammond in connection with the early morning carjacking and shooting death of 62 year-Old Arkansas resident Paul Holt. Holt and his wife had traveled to Louisiana as part of a birthday celebration, where Holt was to turn 63 on Sunday.

Chief Jimmy Travis says shortly before 8AM today (May 6, 2023), deputies responded to the Red Roof Plus on Puma Drive in Hammond, after it was reported a person had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies located Paul Holt of Arkansas with a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies quickly learned Holt was carjacked and subsequently shot while he and his wife were entering their vehicle. The investigation further revealed Holt and his wife were approached by an armed, masked subject, later identified as Evans, who entered the vehicle and attempted to leave with Holt's wife  in the passenger seat. Holt attempted to stop Evans, and was successful in aiding his wife's escape. While doing so, Evans shot Holt, who was unarmed, and fled in the stolen SUV. Holt subsequently succumbed to his injuries while at North Oaks Hospital.

Investigators located the vehicle later in the day, and through investigatory means were able to develop Evans as the suspect. Upon locating Evans, he not only confessed to the crime, but was found to be in possession of items belonging to the victims as well as the clothing and other items used to perpetrate the murder and carjacking. Included in those items were a "Ghost Gun" with a Glock Switch.

Evans has been booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on the charges of 1st Degree Murder, Carjacking, Possession of Unidentifiable Firearm, Armed Robbery with a Firearm, and Possession of a Machine Gun.

***All persons accused of a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty***

Note on Ghost Gun: Ghost guns are unserialized and untraceable firearms that can be bought online
and assembled at home. They are often sold through "ghost gun kits," which include all of the parts and often the equipment necessary to build these weapons at home. These kits are widely available and can be purchased by anyone, including prohibited purchasers, domestic abusers, and gun traffickers — without a background check.

22 Year-Old Slidell Man Indicted – Faces Up Life in Prison

Evans. Poole is charged with carjacking, brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

If convicted of carjacking, Poole faces a maximum of 15 years. If convicted of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, Poole faces a minimum of seven years up to a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, which must run consecutive to any other sentence. If convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Poole faces a maximum of 15 years.

U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Additional Tangipahoa Parish Residents Sentenced in Jungle Life Mafia Street Gang Prosecution

Jerald Alexander, age 38 and a Tangipahoa Parish resident, was sentenced on May 4, 2023, to 87 months imprisonment, 5 years of supervised release, and a $400 mandatory special assessment fee by U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.  Alexander had previously previously pled guilty to conspiracy to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Star Robichaux, age 43 and a Tangipahoa Parish resident, was sentenced on April 25, 2023, to 22 months imprisonment, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.  Robichaux previously pled guilty to conspiracy to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl and 1 kilogram or more of heroin.

According to court documents, Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”) agents began investigating the drug trafficking activities of the Jungle Life Mafia street gang in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana in 2019.  The investigation spanned two years.  Jerald Alexander served as the marijuana source of supply for multiple co-conspirators, including Michael Alexander, Sr., Atrell Anderson, and Terrell Haynes. DEA agents executed a search warrant at his residence which resulted in the seizure of 10 pounds of marijuana, $290,339 in U.S. currency, and a Palmetto Arms, Model PA-15, multi-caliber pistol.

Pursuant to a traffic stop, Robichaux was found to be in possession of four ounces of heroin mixed with fentanyl that she planned to deliver to co-conspirator Terrell Haynes.

This prosecution is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States by using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.

This case was investigated by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, Hammond Police Department, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Twenty-First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Twenty-Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney J. Benjamin Myers of the Narcotics Unit.

Amite Man Wanted for Burglary in Hammond

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office is asking the public's assistance in locating 45 year-old Thomas Mutz of Amite on outstanding warrants.

Chief Jimmy Travis says Mutz was identified as the person of interest in the burglary of Grilliot Construction which is located on Club Deluxe Road in Hammond, behind the old Fun Farm venue. Earlier this week, several deer camera images of Mutz were released in which Mutz was quickly identified through many tips coming in via social media, Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa, and law enforcement officers who were familiar with him.

Through the course of the investigation, it was learned Mutz broke into a storage container and took several tools, chainsaws, and other items, as well as the very deer cameras from which his picture was taken. When Mutz removed the cameras from the location, he unknowingly activated them, sending photos of himself to the owner's phone.

Mutz currently has warrants for Burglary and Failure to Appear.

Chief Travis asks anyone with information regarding the location of Mutz to contact Detective Bobby Bradberry at 985-902-2045, OR if you wish to remain anonymous, please call Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa’s anonymous tip line at 1-800-554-5245 or visit www.tangicrimestoppers.com and click on the P3 Tips icon or Submit A Tip! You may be eligible for a cash reward.

Watermelon Festival Is Back!!!

Saturday, April 15th, the Washington Parish Watermelon, Fruit, & Vegetable Association in conjunction with local sponsors held the Watermelon Festival Run/Walk in Franklinton. B4 Fitness, Jack Brown's, and Mrs. Ola Magee sponsored the event.

Initiated by efforts made by Franklinton Mayor Greg Route, the Town of Franklinton, and Parish President, Richard “Ned” Thomas, along with local growers and interested parties, the watermelon association that held the Washington Parish Watermelon Festival in the past was legally reorganized and re-formed. The non-profit organization's stated purpose is the marketing of Washington Parish agricultural products, promoting the “branding” of the Washington Parish name as it relates to local products, and promoting, sponsoring, and organizing the Washington Parish Watermelon Festival, and supporting education based expertise to growers.

This year the Watermelon Festival will be held July 7th-9th, the weekend after the Fourth of July, at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds. Events are named after popular watermelon varieties to promote the Washington Parish watermelon crop. Vendors will be setting up throughout Friday morning and into mid-afternoon.

Family friendly festivities will begin with a parade procession following the route of the Fair Parade, stopping to have a formal flag raising ceremony led by the American Legion, then proceeding to the rodeo arena for the community wide “Star Brite Sweet Heart Dance”. A live band accompanied by a DJ will perform at the event where various musical genre are guaranteed to appeal to all musical tastes. Everyone is encouraged to bring a sweetheart, find a sweetheart, or for those who do not dance (or find a sweetheart), just enjoy the music and fellowship which will be followed by a spectacular “Moon & Stars Fireworks Show” launched from the Midway.

Saturday will be filled with live entertainment, various watermelon contests, the “Crimson Sweet Fire Truck Hose Down”, and the “Georgia Rattlesnake Ranch Style Rodeo”.
