Slidell Police Foil Theft Attempt by Several Metairie Juveniles

The Slidell Police Department reports that recently several juveniles from Metairie came to Slidell in two stolen cars, armed with a gun, and sought out to burglarize and steal. They got caught in the process of stealing a Ford F-150.

When Slidell Police responded, all of the suspects fled in the stolen vehicles...the newly stolen 2021 F-150, a 2019 Nissan Versa, and a 2007 Honda Civic. Three pursuits were initiated. The 2007 Honda Civic crashed by the Highway 11 bridge. The 15-year-old juvenile tried to run, but was quickly apprehended. Inside on the front passenger seat was a Sig Sauer .40 caliber P250, loaded and ready to go. The F-150 and Versa continued on to New Orleans, with officers in chase. The Versa crashed in NOLA East and the F-150 was later found in Metairie. SPD has identified the ones who got away.

The juvenile suspects are facing the following charges: Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Illegal Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Illegal Possession of a Firearm, Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Possession of Burglary Tools, Resisting an Officer.

SPD expressed their thanks to their fellow brothers and sisters in blue at the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, Louisiana State Police, NOPD, and JPSO for their assistance

SPD's reporting of the incident included the following: “Your Slidell Police Department relentlessly fights crime coming to our city. As you know, we don't give up, we don't stop, and we catch em'! As was the case in this crazy story...”

Sheriff Seal Announces Deployment of Body Cameras

In an effort to improve transparency, Washington Parish Sheriff Randy “Country” Seal is equipping its enforcement deputies with body cameras, and citizens will begin seeing them in use as early as next week.

Sheriff Seal signed a contract with Axon Enterprise (formerly TASER International) to purchase body cameras for criminal patrol enforcement deputies with plans to expand to narcotics, civil and investigations as budgeting permits.

The $186,000, five-year contract includes not only the cameras, but also the necessary training and, more importantly, the storage and records management for the cameras and footage. As part of the contract, Axon Enterprise provided the necessary training on the usage of the cameras.

Sheriff Seal said purchasing body cameras has been one of his top priorities. “Our administration made the effort to find the money in the agency’s general fund to purchase the cameras. We are excited to equip our deputies with this essential tool,” Sheriff Seal said. “This tool will help increase and promote transparency and accountability within the ranks and within the community we serve. Body cameras put everyone, deputies and citizens alike, on their best behavior.”

Bogalusa Businessman Arrested

Kelvin R. Thomas, 57, a Bogalusa businessman, was arrested on May 19 by detectives with the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force. Thomas, a resident of Highway 424, was jailed on multiple charges of sale of methamphetamine and contempt of court. His bond was set at $150,000.

The arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation into the sale of illegal narcotics by Thomas. On more than one occasion, illegal drugs were purchased from him at his business which is located on Superior Avenue in Bogalusa.

“The sale of illegal drugs creates a horrific trail of suffering throughout our parish,” stated Sheriff Randy Seal. “It is always good when a drug trafficker is arrested and jailed. Our Drug Task Force detectives work around the clock to identify drug dealers, build a sustainable case against them and gather enough evidence to take them to trial. I congratulate our narcotics detectives for their good work.”

97 Bottles of Illegally Obtained “Cough Syrup” Found During Traffic Stop Near Covington

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest after 97 bottles of illegally obtained “cough syrup” was found during a stop on Interstate 12. At approximately 11 p.m. on Monday (May 16, 2022), two vehicles traveling together eastbound on I-12 near Covington were stopped by detectives with the STPSO Highway Enforcement Unit after they were observed committing various traffic infractions.

The occupants of the first vehicle, a black Mercedes C300, told the detectives they were on their way from Houston to Covington to go to court for a previous arrest. Donta Evans of Houston, Texas, and Domanique Gasaway of Galveston, Texas, were arrested on narcotics distribution charges in that same vehicle during a traffic stop on April 6, 2022.

A consensual search of the Mercedes sedan on Monday yielded negative results for illegal narcotics this time. Evans was subsequently issued a citation for Following Too Close and No Driver’s License, and both he and Gasaway were released.

Meanwhile, the driver of the second vehicle, a Chevrolet Cruze, which is also registered to Gasaway, refused to provide consent to search that vehicle. K-9 Echo was called to the scene and alerted to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle was conducted, resulting in the discovery of 97 bottles (1 pint each) of Promethazine Hydrochloride syrup.

The driver of the Chevrolet Cruze, 24 year-old Colin Walthall of Houston, was placed under arrest for Speeding, Improper Lane Use and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Legend Drug without a Prescription. Walthall also had an outstanding warrant through the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office for Failure to Appear for prior drug offenses. He was transported to the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center, where he was booked as a fugitive.

Safe Boating Week is May 21-27 - Check Your Boat & Gear

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division will be participating in “Safe Boating Week” from May 21-27, which signifies the beginning of the spring and summer boating season.

LDWF will again be reminding all boaters to be safe, responsible and knowledgeable while on the water during this safe boating week.  Safe Boating Week is a time for all boaters to inspect their vessels to ensure that all required safety equipment is on board and that vessels are in good working condition. LDWF agents will be out in full force as always during the week to perform boating safety checks that includes making sure all personal flotation device (PFD) regulations are being followed and that each vessel has a sober operator.

“Safe boating week is a good time to make sure your boat and all of your safety equipment is ready to go,” said Major Clay Marques, the state’s safe boating law administrator.  “We want people to have fun on the water, but to do it in a safe and responsible manner.  That starts with wearing a personal flotation device, having a sober operator and the required safety equipment for your vessel.”

In 2021, Louisiana reported 26 boating fatalities of which 19 of the fatalities were not wearing a personal flotation device.  So far, in 2022 Louisiana has reported 10 fatalities.

Each vessel should have enough PFDs on board for all occupants.  LDWF regulations also state that anyone 16 years of age and younger must wear a PFD while underway in vessels less than 26-foot long.  For more boating and PFD regulations, please visit www.wlf.louisiana.gov and click on the “Boating” tab.

Alcohol use is one of the leading causes of boating crash incidents and fatalities on the water.  Alcohol consumption impairs a boater's judgment, balance, vision and reaction time.  The penalties for operating or driving a vessel while intoxicated (DWI) are the same as driving a vehicle.  Anyone cited for a DWI on the water or on the road will lose his or her driver's license and boating privileges for the specified time ordered by the judge in the case.

LDWF also wants to remind anybody born after Jan. 1, 1984 that they are required to successfully complete a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) boating education course to operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower.  Since the safe boating course’s inception in 2003, over 140,000 boaters have been certified in Louisiana.

LDWF offers these classes free of charge statewide.  For more information and to schedule a safe boating course, please visit www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/boater-education.

Slidell Arrest Clears 17 Vehicle Burglary Cases

The arrest of 28 year-old Slidell-area resident Gary Hansome has cleared 17 vehicle burglary cases in the east St. Tammany. After learning of the location of a stolen laptop, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the location and executed a search warrant at the residence. There deputies discovered numerous additional items suspected of being stolen, prompting a two-week-long investigation.

Ultimately, Hansome was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on 17 counts of Burglary and one count of Theft Under $1,000. The theft charge comes from a shoplifting case at a local business.

The known vehicle burglaries go back to December 2021 and occurred in the Kingspoint Subdivision near Slidell and the Cherrywood Subdivisions near Pearl River. Although the owners of most of the stolen property have been identified, detectives are still trying to find the owners of some unclaimed items.

Anyone that may have been the victim of a vehicle burglary in the Kingspoint or Cherrywood Subdivisions is asked to contact Detective Mike Kim at (985) 276-1325 or STPSO Central Dispatch at (985) 898-2338.

Traffic Stop on I-59 Leads to Seizure of Guns

A traffic stop, which occurred on Interstate 59 around midnight on May 12, 2022, resulted in three illegally possessed firearms being taken off the streets. The driver, 42 year-old Travis M. Kildal of Washington state, claimed to be staying in Picayune, Miss.

Kildal, who is a convicted felon for multiple offenses, reportedly admitted to possessing a marijuana THC vape pen cartridge inside the vehicle, and a subsequent search of the vehicle located a total of four vape pens containing suspected THC along with three firearms.

Kildal was placed under arrest and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center for three counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and one count each of Improper Lane Use and Failure to Signal when Changing Lanes.

He was also issued a summons for Possession of a Schedule I CDS (marijuana).

Man Wanted in Slidell (for Cutting Office his Ankle Monitor) Found Sleeping in a Backyard

A suspicious person call resulted in an arrest Monday (May 16, 2022) night after alert St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies realized the man was giving a false name and in fact had warrants for his arrest and was also being sought by a nearby agency after he cut off his ankle monitoring device.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, STPSO patrol deputies were dispatched to a residence on Nellie Drive near Slidell after the homeowner found a man sleeping in her backyard. The sleeper provided a fake name, but deputies soon learned the man was in fact 47 year-old Jason Shields, an individual wanted on warrants for failing to appear in court on bank fraud charges.

Shields was also wanted by Misdemeanor Probation and Parole and Slidell Police after he cut off his ankle monitoring device.

STPSO deputies took Shields into custody and booked him into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on the above mentioned warrants plus on one count each of Trespassing and Resisting an Officer by Providing a False Name.

“I applaud the deputies who responded to this call,” Sheriff Randy Smith. “Because of their training and alertness they were able to quickly realize this individual was not being truthful, and successfully prevented his efforts to avoid arrest.”

District Attorney Warren Montgomery reports that on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, Joseph Paul Grant, age 59 and of Slidell, was sentenced by District Judge Scott Gardner to life in prison without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence after a first-degree robbery incident.

The incident which brought him before the Judge for sentencing as a multiple offender occurred on April 4, 2019. Slidell Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at a Slidell gas station. Upon arrival, police found a victim who relayed what had happened and officers were able to view video surveillance footage.

A black male wearing pink multi-colored slippers, a black hooded sweatshirt and sweat pants with a Saints cap turned backwards arrived at the store, walked around the counter and grabbed the store clerk by the neck and demanded that she open the cash register. He then proceeded to punch her multiple times all while threatening to kill her. He eventually fled after taking approximately $200 worth of cash and a few boxes of Kool cigarettes. Video footage also showed that the defendant had two distinctive warts on his middle finger.

Grant was taken into custody and a search warrant was executed on his vehicle and residence. At his residence, officers found the matching Saints hat, black clothing, pink multi-colored slippers, and pack of Kool cigarettes. In his vehicle, officers found an additional pack of Kool cigarettes and other miscellaneous items.

A jury found him guilty on January 1, 2022 for this incident. He was first sentenced to 40 years in prison prior to the filing of the Multiple Offender Bill of Information. Grant had five prior felony convictions for possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance (cocaine), purse snatching, armed robbery and attempted manslaughter. He also had another pending felony charge for possession of a Schedule II drug.

On Tuesday, the Court denied the Grant's Motion for a New Trial and Motion for Post-Verdict Judgment of Acquittal. During his Multiple Offender Arraignment, also held Tuesday, the Grant admitted to the Multiple Offender Bill of Information. The Court found that Life provisions applied, vacated the 40-year sentence and sentenced the defendant to Life in Prison. The Judge commented that the defendant acted with indifference and cruelty to the victim.

The trial was handled by Assistant District Attorney Blake Peters.
