WP Sheriff Randy Seal Criticized for Christian Statements

A press release from the Freedom From Religion Foundation claims that they have “brought to an end a Louisiana sheriff’s sermonizing over the department’s official social media.” The release goes on to report that “A concerned local resident contacted FFRF to report that Washington Parish Sheriff Randy Seal regularly invoked Christian scripture in his official statements as sheriff, statements that were reflected on the Washington Parish Sheriff’s official Facebook page.“

On January 13, 2018, Sheriff Randy Seal issued a statement that “A recent decision by me in my official capacity as Sheriff is being touted as a victory for the ardently anti-Christian Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF). I want to set the record straight.”

In our opinion, Sheriff Seal's decision was a responsible one and in the best interest of those he serves.

Loss of Revenue Dominates Franklinton Aldermen Meeting

With sales tax revenues plummeting, the Franklinton Board of Aldermen expressed their concerns at their meeting Tuesday evening (January 9, 2018).
It was reported to the Board that the November - December, 2017 sales tax revenues came in $43,000 lower than the November - December, 2016 receipts. The trend has been noticed over time and it was suggested that the primary cause for the reduced sales tax revenues is the openings of Dollar General stores outside of the Town's corporate limits.
Comments included optimism that the opening of Tractor Supply will help and suggestions to extend the corporate limits.

Tangipahoa Sheriff Sued Over Prisoner's Beating Death

Source: nola.com and Michael Kunzelman of the Associated Press
Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards and Warden Stuart Murphy failed to protect prisoner Tommy Joe Smith (40) from being beaten to death by a dozen other inmates last year in an attack that an eyewitness compared to a "shark feeding frenzy," a federal lawsuit claims. Relatives of Smith filed the lawsuit Tuesday (January 9, 2017).
Smith was jailed in January, 2017 for a probation violation stemming from his 2015 conviction for a sex crime that isn't specified in the suit. Staff at the parish jail in Amite didn't segregate Smith from violent prisoners even though they knew his criminal history increased his risk of being attacked, the suit claims. The suit says 12 inmates attacked Smith about 1:45 a.m. on January 31, 2017, shortly after he was confined in a two-tier dormitory housing roughly 21 inmates. A coroner concluded Smith died of blunt force trauma to the head with bleeding in his brain. "Smith's family was advised by the funeral home that due to the extent and severity of the damage to Smith's head, an open casket would not be possible," the suit says.
The suit, filed in the Eastern District of Louisiana, seeks unspecified damages. A great-grandmother and mother of Smith's two children are named as plaintiffs.

Arrest Made in Robbery of Bogalusa Fireworks Stand

On December 31, 2017, the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a robbery of a fireworks stand in Bogalusa. Based on eyewitness accounts, Latrevious Lucas (18) of Bogalusa was identified as the suspect. Lucas reportedly turned off the electricity to the fireworks stand by tripping the breaker located behind the stand. He then jumped over the counter and attempted to grab the money box. The box was attached to the shelf by screws, so Lucas then took the cash from the money box, jumped back over the counter, and ran in the direction of Avenue L. A warrant was issued for Simple Robbery and Lucas was arrested and booked into the Washington Parish Jail on January 8, 2018.
Lucas previously plead guilty to three (3) counts of simple burglary and two (2) counts of theft between $750-$5,000 and was placed on probation for five (5) years. Lucas remains in the Washington Parish Jail on a probation violation hold.
Sheriff Randy Seal said, “This is a case of a repeat offender. Lucas was given mercy with a probated sentence. Instead of taking advantage of this opportunity, he chose to squander it and continue a life of crime. I am reminded of a quote from an old Greek play, 'All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong.' Unfortunately this young man didn’t yield and now must face the severe consequences of his actions.”
