Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Traffic Advisory From LSP

The annual Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival will take place April 11th through April 13th. Over 300,000 visitors are expected in the downtown Ponchatoula area. This increased traffic is likely to overload the surrounding interstate system causing dangerous backups from heavily congested off-ramps. This type of traffic could force intermittent closures of interstate exits. In an effort to improve the flow of traffic and ensure that everyone has a safe festival weekend, Louisiana State Police Troop L urges motorists to follow the following alternate route advisories when entering and leaving the Ponchatoula area.

  • From Baton Rouge: Exit Interstate 12 Eastbound at Pumpkin Center exit #35, proceed south to LA 22, then continue east on LA 22 into Ponchatoula.
  • From Covington / Slidell: Exit Interstate 12 Westbound at LA 445 exit #47, proceed south to LA 22, then continue west on LA 22 into Ponchatoula.
  • From Mandeville: Take LA 22 west into Ponchatoula.
  • From New Orleans: Take the Causeway Bridge into Mandeville and proceed to LA 22 west into Ponchatoula.

Louisiana State Police will be working closely with local law enforcement agencies to ensure everyone enjoys the festival and has a safe weekend. There will also be additional Troopers on patrol throughout the festival weekend proactively looking for impaired and aggressive drivers in the area.

Please remember, when it comes to road safety, it takes everyone’s participation. Those traveling the roadways should develop a plan that includes the guidelines below to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy festival activities without jeopardizing their lives or the lives of others:

  • · Do not drive distracted;
  • · Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin;
  • · Before drinking, please designate a sober driver and give that person your keys;
  • · If you’re impaired, call a taxi, ride-share service, or a sober friend/family member for a safe ride home;
  • · If you encounter a suspected impaired driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact your local law enforcement;
  • · If you know someone is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely;
  • · Always buckle up. The proper use of seatbelts continues to be the single most effective precaution one can take to greatly reduce the chance of being seriously injured or killed in the event of a crash.

While Troopers will remain vigilant throughout the Ponchatoula and Troop L region, responsible decisions, good driving behavior, and precautionary measures will ensure a safe and enjoyable festival experience for everyone.

To report impaired drivers or unsafe roadway conditions, dial *LSP (*577) to reach the State Police office closest to you.

Here are Some More Tomato Tips

Tomato plants need to be supported in some way. Stakes, cages, and a string-and-weave system are all options. Support structures for indeterminate (vining) varieties need to be taller (6 feet or more) than those for determinate (bush-type) varieties.

Suckers – shoots that grow between the leaves and the main stem of a tomato plant – are removed from the bases of tomato plants so that fruits will be larger and harvest will begin earlier.

On determinate varieties, only remove suckers under the one immediately below the first flower cluster. In other words, one sucker should be left below the first flower cluster. On indeterminate varieties, remove suckers below the second flower cluster.

Suckers should be removed when they’re about 2 inches long. If you accidentally let one get longer than 4 inches, just leave it. Removing them at that point may do more harm than good.

A problem people commonly experience in tomato gardens is blossom end rot. This is associated with low calcium in the fruit. However, having blossom end rot doesn’t necessarily mean that the calcium level in the soil is low. If soil is limed appropriately to adjust soil pH, soil calcium is typically sufficient.

Blossom end rot can occur because the water supply is irregular. Calcium moves upward with water in the plant, and if soil is allowed to dry excessively, sufficient calcium won’t be able to reach the fruit. On the other hand, if soil is too wet, roots won’t function well, and plants may not take up enough calcium.

Try to keep soil moisture consistent, rather than letting it get too dry or stay too wet. Mulching can help conserve water so that soil doesn’t dry out as quickly and the amount of water available to the plant doesn’t vary as much over time.

Excessive fertilizer can also contribute to blossom end rot, so avoid overfertilizing. Nitrogen in the ammonium form can compete with calcium for uptake by roots, so nitrate-based nitrogen sources like calcium nitrate are recommended for side-dressing tomatoes.

To reduce problems with leaf diseases like early blight and bacterial spot, avoid watering from overhead in the late afternoon or evening. If you water in a way that gets leaves wet – such as with a sprinkler or by spraying water from a hose – do this in the early morning.

Other ways to minimize leaf disease problems include not working in the garden when leaves are wet; rotating where in the garden you plant tomatoes; removing old plants at the end of the season; and doing a good job of managing weeds in the garden.

Fungicides labeled for use on tomatoes and containing chlorothalonil can be used to reduce spread of fungal leaf diseases. Copper-containing fungicides protect plants from leaf diseases caused by bacteria as well as some fungi.

Hornworms can eat a great deal of leaf tissue quickly and sometimes go unnoticed until they’ve done so, since they blend in with the plant. They can be removed by hand if observed. Because they glow under the light of an ultraviolet flashlight (blacklight), this can be used in the evening to help find them.

The tomato fruitworm (same as corn earworm) is often problematic. It may go unnoticed until it has already entered and damaged fruit. Where fruitworms have been a problem, an appropriate insecticide can be applied beginning when plants first start to set fruit. Spinosad-containing insecticides are effective on fruitworms and hornworms.

Insecticides with Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Btk) or pyrethroid chemicals (active ingredients with names ending in “thrin,” such as permethrin, and esfenvalerate) may work, too, but there is resistance to these in some tomato hornworm populations. Pyrethroid insecticides are effective against stink bugs and leaffooted bugs, as well, but they are also quite hazardous to bees and other beneficial insects.

If you apply an insecticide, wait until late afternoon or early evening, when bees are no longer active. Make sure any pesticide (insecticide, fungicide, or other) you use is labeled for use on tomatoes, and read and follow label directions.

Let me know if you have questions.

Loranger Man in Wheelchair Killed in Tangipahoa Parish Crash

Loranger – On April 8, 2025, shortly before 5:50 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on LA Hwy 445 near Gliderport Road in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 73-year-old Keith Guidry of Loranger.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Ford F-350 was traveling north on LA Hwy 445. At the same time, Guidry was traveling southbound in a wheelchair in the northbound lane of the highway. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford struck Guidry in the roadway.

Guidry was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford, who was properly restrained, was not injured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were collected from both Guidry and the driver for analysis.

Louisiana State Police urge both pedestrians and motorists to remain alert and aware of their surroundings while on or near roadways. Crashes involving pedestrians are often preventable when basic safety practices are followed. Pedestrians, including those using mobility devices, should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and avoid traveling on roadways in dark areas. Pedestrians must assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Pedestrians should cross roadways in well-lit, designated areas and always travel facing traffic. These simple steps can help enhance safety for all pedestrians.

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 6, 2025)- The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office has taken 34-year-old Joshua Brocato. a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) suspect into custody in connection with the murder of an Amite-area couple, Joshua Brocato's parents.

Click here for previous related stories

On Friday (April 4, 2025) Brocato was arrested when Marina Del Rey station deputies spotted the van TPSO identified as a suspect vehicle parked on Fairfax Avenue. At the time of the arrest, Brocato was wearing green military-style attire and had three guns in the van, including an assault rifle, along with body armor.

The arrest stems from a welfare check request to TPSO around 1 p.m. Thursday (April 3, 2025). When deputies arrived to the home on Eastwood Drive in the Amite area, they found 66-year-old Priscilla Brocato dead inside of the home. Her husband, 75-year-old Marc Brocato was later found dead on the couple’s property.

Their son, Joshua Brocato was unaccounted for and initially sought as a person of interest. Following an autopsy of the couple, an arrest warrant for two counts of 1st Degree Murder was issued for Joshua Brocato. The reason for this crime is still unknown.

After tracking back the movements of the Brocatos’ van, TPSO alerted several agencies in the southern California area about it, and Joshua, likely being there. Within a few hours, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office Marina del Rey station had him in custody.

In addition to the warrant from TPSO, Brocato faces charges in California for Possession of a Loaded Unregistered Firearm, Possession of an Assault Weapon, and Alter or Remove a Serial Number on a Firearm.

LSU AgCenter's Weekly Message

April is a Good Time to Plant Tomatoes

Few vegetables are as beloved as fresh tomatoes. Growing your own is a chance to get them fresh off the plant and to have your choice of varieties.

In April, there’s little chance of another frost, and it’s still early enough that tomatoes planted now are less likely to experience the excessively warm temperatures that interfere with pollination and fruit set. (If you plant tomatoes after April in Louisiana, it’s advised to use “heat-set” varieties.)

Tomatoes are not the most trouble-free of vegetables. Try not to replant in a place where you planted them last year, to reduce the chance of having trouble with soilborne diseases. Choosing varieties that have resistance to root knot nematodes, Fusarium wilt, tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), and/or other diseases will reduce the likelihood of having certain issues. If you water in a way that gets the leaves wet, do this in the early morning rather than the late afternoon or evening.

Good drainage is important for tomatoes, as it is for most vegetables. If drainage at your site is poor, consider growing in a raised bed or container.

Soil pH for tomatoes should be between pH 6 and 7. Lime applied to raise soil pH also provides calcium and, if dolomitic lime is used, magnesium.

In the absence of soil test results, for every 100 feet of row (or 300 square feet), 4 pounds (8 cups) of 8-24-24 or 13-13-13 can be mixed into the soil before planting. Side dress plants at the time of first fruit-set (when blossoms drop and the first tiny fruits appear) with calcium nitrate, at a rate of 1.5 to 2 pounds (2.5 to 3.5 cups) per 100 feet of row / 300 square feet. Side dress again when the third and (optionally) fourth flower clusters set fruit.

Tomatoes can be spaced 18 to 24 inches apart within a row. Wider spacing will allow more air movement and may reduce disease.

If you’re planting in a container, try to find one that’s at least 5 gallons in size, and make sure it has drainage holes in the bottom. Many potting mixes have fertilizer mixed into them, and you can supplement that with a water-soluble fertilizer. Try to find one in which the concentrations of phosphate and potash are greater – or at least as great as – that of nitrogen.

Let me know if you have questions.

Today's Message from ADAPT

Many victims of drug overdose have bystanders nearby who could have helped. Recognizing an opioid overdose can be difficult. If you aren’t sure, it is best to treat the situation like an overdose - you could save a life. Call 911 or seek medical care for the individual.

A medication called Narcan can reverse an overdose from opioids.

Anyone can carry Narcan, give it to someone experiencing an overdose, and potentially save a life.
