Update (5:39 PM, September 18, 2024): The juvenile detained for questioning has been released. The juvenile was not found to have a firearm or any dangerous weapon. Following a thorough investigation, no evidence was uncovered to establish probable cause for an arrest or to indicate that the juvenile was responsible for the online threat. The juvenile will not return to school until this matter is fully resolved. Additionally, during the investigation, several other rumored threats were brought to the attention of the Covington Police Department. CPD, in coordination with the St. Tammany Parish School System, is actively investigating all information related to these rumors and will continue to do so until the situation is fully addressed.

The Covington Police Department reported a social media threat directed to Covington High School this morning (September 18, 2024). In a message to the community, CPD advised the following:“Your safety is our top priority. We want to inform you that there has been an increased police presence at Covington High School this morning due to a reported social media threat of violence directed towards the school.
We want to assure you that a juvenile subject has been taken into custody for questioning, and the police will remain on-site throughout the school day as a precautionary measure.
Please be assured that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of everyone at Covington High School. If you have any concerns or information, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
