Covington Man Sentenced to 50 Years in Prison for Sexually Abusing Young Girl

Collin Sims, District Attorney reports that today (February 16, 2024), 41 year-old Daniel Lascari of Covington was sentenced by District Judge Scott Gardner to 50 years in prison for molestation of a juvenile and sexual battery of a child.

On December 21, 2023, a 12-person jury found Lascari guilty of both charges following a 4-day trial. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Elizabeth Authement and Casey Allen. Following the verdict on December 21st, Mr. Sims stated, “This case is a tremendous example of this office’s commitment to vigorously prosecute these types of cases and our dedicated prosecutors’ relentless pursuit of justice in the face of obstacles encountered during the prosecution of this child’s sexual abuser. Additionally, it is essential to the successful prosecution of these cases the dedication shown in this case by teachers, counselors, law enforcement officers, medical professionals, and our partners at the Children’s Advocacy Center.”

At sentencing, the victim’s handwritten impact statement was read aloud in the courtroom prior to the imposition of sentencing. She explained how her “life had been ruined” by the defendant and that she “knew [he] didn’t care”. She asked the judge to “give him the max” sentence allowed by law.

During the December trial, testimony from witnesses established that in March of 2018, the then 8-year-old victim told her teacher that when she went to the bathroom, she noticed she was bleeding. The teacher brought her to the counselor’s office. The victim then reported to the counselor that she might be “starting her period” or that it could be because her mother’s fiancé “got carried away last night.” She went on to describe to the counselor what the man had been doing to her for approximately 8 months. School officials immediately notified law enforcement of the situation and an investigation commenced. During the course of the investigation, the victim disclosed how her mother’s fiancé would come into her bedroom at night, move her from a top bunk to a bottom bunk and rub peppermint lotion all over her body, including inside her private area. While he was doing this, he told her “this is the way people relax.” She was able to describe in detail how he moved his fingers and how he’d once made her massage his private part.

The mother of the victim testified at the trial that she was reluctant to have the victim testify because she was concerned about her daughter. Following the disclosure, she relocated with her daughter to another state. She described in painful detail the toll that the abuse took on the victim. She told the jury how the victim spent over a year in counseling and would likely need further treatment. Despite the mother’s reservations, she said that she relented when the victim insisted she was finally ready to confront her abuser in court.

Workgroup to Improve Conditions for Teachers

“Let Teachers Teach” Workgroup to identify and develop possible solutions to classroom disruptions
such as excessive training and paperwork, scripted lessons, and student discipline"

(BATON ROUGE, LA) - The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) is launching a new workgroup to learn more about the classroom disruptions keeping teachers from focusing on the most important aspect of their job — teaching students. State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley announced the Let Teachers Teach Workgroup. Dr. Brumley created the group after educator engagement revealed a number of challenges taking time away from classroom instruction, including excessive training and paperwork, being required to follow scripted lessons, and student behavior and discipline issues.

“Other than the parent, there is nothing more critical to student success than an effective teacher,” said Dr. Brumley. “One of the best ways we can value teaching professionals is by simply protecting their time to do the important work entrusted to them.”

The workgroup will include PK-12 teachers from across the state. The LDOE is working with its various teacher committees and Louisiana education organizations to identify teachers for the workgroup. Recommendations from organizations should be emailed to ldoecommunications@la.gov. Current Louisiana Teacher of the Year Kylie Altier will chair the workgroup.

“I wholeheartedly believe teaching is the best job in the world because of the children, and I can think of no greater work than ensuring teachers can keep their full focus on students,” said Altier.

The workgroup is the product of feedback the LDOE has received through formal channels such as the Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council as well as informal channels such as classroom visits and faculty meetings hosted by Dr. Brumley. Meetings are expected to begin in the spring.

Bogalusa Man Arrested for Attempted Murder & Arson

According to a report from the Louisiana State Fire Marshal, SFM deputies have arrested 29 year-old Christopher Conerly, Sr. of Bogalusa for setting fire to an apartment unit with two people inside. The report states that Conerly was booked into the Washington Parish Jail on February 9, 2024 on 2 counts of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, and one count of Aggravated Arson and that he faces additional related charges from other law enforcement agencies.

Around 3 a.m. on February 6, 2024, the Bogalusa Fire Department responded to the 700 block of Redmond Heights for a report of an apartment fire. When firefighters arrived, they found the doorway of one unit smoldering. Firefighters learned the occupant of the unit had been inside with an infant child when they were alerted to the fire and acted quickly to put it out.

Investigating SFM deputies determined the fire was intentionally set and identified Conerly, a resident of the apartment, as a suspect.

An arrest warrant was obtained and, thanks to the assistance of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi, Conerly was taken into custody. He was booked on local charges before being transported to the Washington Parish Jail in connection with this case.

The SFM would like to thank the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for their partnership in this case.
