Roundup in Walthall County Nets 18

Yesterday (December 14), agents of the McComb Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Office, Walthall County Sheriff’s Department, Tylertown Police Department and U.S. Marshall Service conducted a round up operation of approximately 18 narcotics violators in Tylertown, Walthall County, MS. This operation has been dubbed “Double Entendre”. 

Arrestees included David Brister (for Sale of Methamphetamine -2 counts), Robert Jeffrey Conerly (for Grand Larceny, Conspiracy to Commit Grand Larceny, and for Possession of Methamphetamine and Hydrocodone), Colby Mitchell (for Burglary of a Building, Conspiracy to Commit to Burglary of a Building and ​Burglary of an Automobile), Hollie Nicole Berthelot (for Possession of Methamphetamine), Britanya Damond (for Unlawful sale of at least Two But Less than Ten Dosage of Oxycodone), Christopher Sorrow (for Sale of Alprazolam), Donavan Scott Beard (for Possession of Methamphetamine), Michael Allen Heully (for Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine), James Parker Singletary (for Sale of Methamphetamine), Jeremy Wayne McKenzie (for Burglary of a Building and Conspiracy to Commit Burglary of a Building), Tramaine Wagner (for Sale of Marijuana), Charles Guy (for Sale of Adderall), James Russell Case (for Sale of Methamphetamine – 2 counts), Courtney Smith (for Sale of Methamphetamine), Bradford Booth (for Sale of Marijuana), Antonio Peters for Sale of Methamphetamine), Robert Todd Baughtman (for Sale of Norco), and Alton Weary (for Sale Alprazolam)

Scary Domestic Violence Incident Leads To Arrest

Slidell Police responded to a domestic disturbance on December 11 and found a female victim who appeared severely battered and with extreme bruising under her eyes and ligature marks around her neck. The vicim said her boyfriend, Christopher Wayne Dixon,wrapped a phone charging cord around her neck, threatened to kill her, and then began punching her in the face repeatedly.  During the attack Dixon ripped out the victim's earrings and bellybutton ring.  Dixon's mother witnessed part of the incident and began yelling at her son to stop.  The victim was relocated to a hospital where it was found that the victim suffered from significant injuries and broken bones.

When detectives located Dixon, he fled into a wooded area and was later found to be hiding inside his residence. He then fled through the rear door but was caught after a brief foot chase. Dixon admitted to the domestic abuse battery and stated he would do it again. He was charged with Second Degree Battery, Domestic Battery (2nd Offense), False Imprisonment, and Criminal Damage to Property.

Dixon had unrelated outstanding arrest warrants for Failure to Appear, Criminal Damage, and Misuse of Telephone Communication. He has a criminal history of arrests for crimes including Felony Hate Crime, Domestic Abuse Battery, 2nd Degree Battery, Aggravated Battery, Simple Battery, Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Aggravated Escape, Simple Escape, Simple Burglary, Unauthorized Entry Of An Inhabited Dwelling, Unauthorized Use Of A Movable, Simple Arson, Attempted Purse Snatching, Theft, Illegal Possession of Stolen Things, Battery On Police, Resisting An Officer, Flight from An Officer, Drug Violations, Traffic Violations, Probation Violations, Failure To Appear Warrants, Fugitive Warrants, and other criminal charges.

One Identified in National Guard Vehicle Burglaries in Franklinton

Franklinton Police Chief Olander Smith has advised that an arrest warrant has been issued in the National Guard car break-in case from July. For Evantrell Tennessee (18).  Tennessee is currently in St. Tammany Parish Jail for an August burglary but will be booked on FPD's warrant upon his release. The FPD warrant is for Vehicle Burglary (26 counts), Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property (26 counts), Theft of Firearm (4 counts), and Criminal Trespassing.

In July, Franklinton Police discovered several vehicles belonging to National Guard soldiers had been burglarized at the Readiness Center and that thousands of dollars of damage had been done. The soldiers had left their vehicles at the center while on a training trip.  

Investigation continues and more arrests may be made.

Entergy Donates $2500 to Bogalusa Help Center

Entergy Customer Service Representative Eunice Harris presented a $2500 check to Gene Hayman, President and Volunteer of the Bogalusa Help Center recently.  “Entergy has always been a sponsor of food pantries throughout the areas it serves, especially during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Seasons”, says Harris.  “It’s just good to spread the joy of giving to those in need.”

“The Center helps to feed approximately 5000 families each year.  That’s about 8000 hungry mouths”, says Hayman.  Most bags contain between seven and eight cans of vegetables, bread, meat, rice, cornmeal, and bananas.  A family of three or more gets two bags.

Recipients are qualified as low income, elderly, or just those in need.  For Christmas, the Center gives a five-lb. hen, cranberry sauce, cake mix, canned sweet potatoes and anything extra that is donated.

Two Arrested for Possession of Officer's Stolen Weapon

A Covington resident who startled two black males sleeping on her back porch yesterday (December 13), called Covington police to report they had left behind a police style assault rifle.  Around the same time, a business called Covington police reporting that they found a gun stand from a police vehicle laying near the gate to the business.

An investigation revealed the .223 assault rifle belonged to Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries and was assigned to an Agent living in the Covington area.  The Agent did not realize his vehicle had been burglarized and he discovered that a Remingon 870 shotgun was also taken.

The two suspects (Cole A. Anderson, Jr. (17) and a 15-year-old), both from Covington, were located at McDonald's on Claiborne Hill and arrested after a brief foot pursuit.  The two were uncooperative when questioned about the location of the missing shotgun.  

Both were charged with Illegal Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Resisting an Officer.  Anderson was also charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile.  More charges are likely as the two fit the description of suspects in two vehicle burglaries. 

Two Tickfaw Residents Killed in Train Crash

Two Tickfaw residents died Tuesday (December 13) after their vehicle collided with a train on LA 1064 in Natalbany. The crash claimed the lives of Colton Williams (23) and Justin B. Lang (23).  

Troopers determined that the cross-arms were down and red lights were flashing, signaling he approach of the southbound AMTRAK passenger train.  However, Williams (the driver) drove around the cross-arms and into the path of the train.  The train crashed into the left side of the vehicle, pushing it nearly 125 yards south of the railroad crossing. 

Both Williams and Lang were were both pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. There were 68 passengers aboard the AMTRAC train at the time of the cash. None of the passengers reported any injuries. 

Trains and cars do not mix. Never race a train to the crossing — even if you tie, you lose.

Unrestrained 19 Year-Old Killed in I-59 Crash

Denise A. Phillips (19) of Pass Christian, Mississippi has died from injuries received in a single vehicle crash that occurred December 12 on I-59 near Slidell. Troopers determined that Phillips lost control of her vehicle and the vehicle crashed into a tree and overturned, ejecting Phillips. Phillips was unrestrained at the time of the crash. She sustained moderate injuries and was transported to University Medical Center New Orleans by Acadian Air in critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Phillips succumbed to her injuries. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in this crash.

Man Faces Possible 40 Years For Downloading Child Porn

District Attorney Warren Montgomery announced that, on December 8, a St. Tammany Parish jury found Jason Yates (39), of Grand Bay, Alabama, guilty of downloading multiple files containing child pornography at his Covington office three years ago. The verdict was on five counts of possession of pornography of juveniles under 13 and two counts of possession of pornography involving juveniles.

Yates faces from 10 to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced by District Judge William Knight on Jan. 5, 2017.

Yates’ crime came to light when the investigation division of the Attorney General’s Office was alerted that files suggestive of child pornography had been downloaded to a computer at a Covington business. An investigation led to Yates, who was alone in the office when the files were downloaded.

Entergy Donates $500 to the Washington Men’s Club in Bogalusa

The WMC’s motto is to “mentor, educate, nurture, and serve.”   Some of the ways it lives by its motto is by sponsoring youth trips to museums, defraying costs for students to participate in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) Program, the NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) Program, and the Bogalusa YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association); purchasing athletic camp equipment, and supporting faith-based Youth initiatives.  The WMC also assisted with renovations to the Cassidy Park after the August flood of 2016; donated to the Anonymous Closet (Students in Need), Robert Hicks Foundation, Washington Parish Democratic Executive Committee, I.D.E.A., LLC, Professional Women’s Service Club, just to name a few.

Northshore Community Orchestra Holiday Concert on Dec. 20

The City of Slidell invites you to attend the second annual Holiday Concert with the Northshore Community Orchestra on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Slidell Municipal Auditorium located at 2055 Second Street in Olde Towne Slidell. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is free, but donations to support the Northshore Community Orchestra are appreciated.

The Northshore Community Orchestra is the only symphony orchestra in St. Tammany Parish where both youths and adults can make learning and performing music a lifelong endeavor. The orchestra, established in 1987, performs several full orchestra concerts performs throughout the year and its members (age 13-83 years of age) are from not only from Slidell and St. Tammany Parish, but also from surrounding parishes.

Darwin Sharp Defeats Doug Brown in Alderman Runoff

Unofficial returns reported by the Louisiana Secretary of State indicate that Darwin Sharp won the runoff for a seat on the Town of Franklinton Board of Aldermen.  Sharp received 344 votes to 304 for Doug Brown in a runoff election that saw a 28.6% voter turnout. 

Sharp will join fellow Aldermen T.J. Butler, Patrice Crain, John Daniel, and Heath Spears who were successful in the November 8 General Election that also saw Richard Dillon elected as Mayor to succeed retiring Mayor Wayne Fleming.

Bogalusa Man Gets 25 Years in Prison for Convenience Store Robbery

District Attorney Warren Montgomery has announced that Kyle Warren (26) of Bogalusa has pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder and armed robbery for robbing a Bogalusa convenience store and attacking the cashier and a customer with a pipe earlier this year.  Warren was sentenced December 6 to 25 years in prison without the benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.

Warren was one of two masked men who entered the Thrifty Shop in Bogalusa on February 9 with pipes and began to attack the cashier and a customer. The cashier and customer fought back, causing the masked men to flee. The event was captured on the store’s surveillance system. Ronald Warren, Kyle Warren's father, was also arrested and his trial is set for December 12.

Kyle Warren also pleaded guilty to domestic abuse battery by strangulation and second degree battery for attacking a pregnant woman last year. He was sentenced to five years in prison. He was sentenced to two years in prison after his guilty plea to theft for stealing money from a woman’s purse in a Wal Mart grocery cart. Both sentences will be served concurrently with the 25-year term.

Grand Jury Indicts Memory Care Facility Cook of Rape

District Attorney Warren Montgomery has announced that a St. Tammany Parish grand jury on Thursday (December 8) indicted Jerry J. Kan (58), a former cook at an assisted living facility in Mandeville, of raping an elderly woman who lived there. Kan was formally charged with first degree rape of a person over the age of 65.

On August 26, an employee of Beau Provence Memory Care Assisted Living contacted the Mandeville Police Department with information about possible sexual misconduct between Kan, who was working at the facility at the time, and a 78-year-old resident. Kan had been seen exiting the resident’s room several times on Aug. 21. A nurse who went to check on the resident after Kan left found her partially clothed and attempting to get dressed. An investigation resulted in Kan’s arrest on August 29.

Beau Provence exclusively serves people who have been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. An administrator at the facility was later charged with obstruction of justice. Her case is still under review.

Drug Deal Gone Wrong Leads to Shooting in Covington

Chief Tim Lentz announces that the Covington Police Department is investigating an overnight shooting that left one victim hospitalized and two people in police custody. Officers responded to a report of gunfire at an apartment complex on S. Jefferson Avenue and found multiple shell casings.

Detectives believe the shooting related to an attempted drug deal gone wrong and that two 18-year-old males met Kayla Clark (21 from Covington) to buy drugs. Something went wrong and Andre Waters, Jr. (22 from Madisonville), believed to be Clark's boyfriend, fired approximately three shots into the vehicle, striking the driver once.  He was found shot to his upper body and was transported to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, where he is currently listed in stable condition. Waters has been charged with Attempted First Degree Murder and Clark has been charged with Attempted Distribution of Schedule I Narcotics and Principal to the crime of Attempted First Degree Murder.

Slidell Police Arrest Two After Gun Found in Front of Toddlers

Slidell Police arrested Tasia Singleton and Ramon Singleton Wednesday (12/07/16) after a traffic stop.  Officers detected the odor of marijuana and observed a handgun on the floorboard in from of two children in the backseat. The officers acted immediately for their safety and the safety of the children and got the two front occupants out and secured the handgun. 

Upon having SPD Dispatch do an NCIC search for the gun, it was learned that the gun was stolen out of New Orleans. Tasia Singleton and passenger Ramon Singleton were arrested on several charges, including Possession Of A Stolen Firearm, Contributing To The Delinquency Of Juveniles, No Child Restraint, and the original traffic violation.

Chief E.J. Howard stated: “this is just another example of the types of calls and incidents that Law Enforcement Officers handle on a daily basis. Thankfully in this incident no one was injured and the officers were able to secure the firearm before the child managed to grab it and possibly hurt himself or someone else”.

Kentwood Woman Sought for Robbing Elderly Man

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking for the Public’s assistance in locating Lindsey D. Newman, 28 year old Female from Kentwood, La.

Newman is wanted for the December 2, 2016, simple robbery incident of an elderly man from the Kentwood area where Newman allegedly forcefully took the victims wallet and removed the cash from within.

Newman is believed to be traveling in an older model Ford Extended Cab Truck, Gray in color. Newman is also believed to be in the Northern Tangipahoa Parish / Pike Co. / Walthall Co. areas.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards is asking for the public's assistance in locating a vehicle stolen in Tickfaw the afternoon of November 19.  The complainant advised deputies he had a habit of leaving his keys inside the vehicle.

The 2014 Jeep wrangler  is described as all black, with all factory emblems and stickers removed except for the Silver Trail Rated Coin Medallion.  It also has a 3 inch lift with 35 inch Nitto Grappler Tires and black XD Series Rims.  

Sheriff Edwards warns all home and vehicle to never leave your home, windows, and vehicles unlocked.   Do not allow yourself to become a victim of opportunity!

Bogalusa Council Elects New Leadership

The Bogalusa Council met Tuesday (December 6) evening to deal with a full agenda that included selection of a new Council President and Vice-President.  Tamira Smith was elected as President to replace Sherry Fortenberry and Doug Ritchie was elected as Vice-President.  Smith presided over the rest of the meeting that included both routine  matters and also controversial issues.

Six ordinances were introduced that will be considered at the next meeting on December 20 and held Public Hearings on five ordinances.  The Council 

• approved an ordinance to purchase the property at 1041 Avenue D from Ms. Diana King Boleware, 
• voted against a zoning change ordinance that would have advanced the move of the Washington Parish Tourism Commission to the triangle on Louisiana Avenue and Virginia Avenue,
•  approved a zoning change in order to open a home care/sitting service office located at 423 Carolina Avenue, 
• approved an ordinance related to contracting for obstruction removal on the runway at the George R. Carr Memorial Airport, and 
• approved an ordinance to accept the lowest estimate for overlaying the 1400-1500 Block of North Roosevelt. 

Kendall Bullen was appointed as the Bogalusa Police Chief, replacing Joe Culpepper, and the Council voted to approve the appointment.  However, the appointment drew comments, both supporting and opposing, the appointment.  (See previous article and video related to this matter)

Kendall Bullen Selected Next Bogalusa Police Chief

At a lengthy and controversial Bogalusa Council meeting Tuesday (December 6), long-time Bogalusa police officer Kendall Bullen was appointed by Mayor Wendy Perrette and approved by a majority of the Council to be Bogalusa Police Chief. Council members Kates, Smith, and McCree voted against approval while Fortenberry, Ard, Drummond, and Ritchie voted to approve the appointment.

Several residents spoke prior to the vote, some in opposition to and some in support of the selection.

LDWF Agents Arrest Two Convicted Felons from Mt. Hermon

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents arrested two Mount Hermon men on December 3 in Washington Parish.  Arrested wereTeddie Williams (26) and Catlin Williams (21) for possessing a stolen firearm, being convicted felons and possessing a firearm, hunting deer during illegal hours with artificial light, hunting deer from a public road and moving vehicle, hunting without basic season and big game hunting licenses and deer tags.

Agents received information about gunfire at night northwest of Franklinton and set up surveillance off of Jim Edwards Rd. and observed the Williams’ in the vehicle driving slowly while spotlighting the fields and ditches. The two admitted to the illegal deer hunting and Agents found out that both were convicted felons and in possession of a stolen .270 rifle.

Agents participating in the case are Sgt. Darryl Galloway, Sgt. Toby Miller and Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Since late September 2016, Detective Travis Pitman and other members of the Tangipahoa Parish Criminal Investigations Unit have been investigating a complaint on Ashaunti Chanzy (B/F, 9/14/1990), of New Orleans, Louisiana.  She stole a wallet from a worker's purse at a medical center in the Hammond area on September 22.  She then used the victim’s credit card to purchase over $2,500.00 worth of merchandise from several local retail establishments.

The investigation revealed that Chanzy is involved in a organized access device fraud ring and is suspected to have committed similar incidents in other surrounding jurisdictions. 

Chanzy is wanted for Relative to Business Burglary (one count), Relative to Unauthorized Use of an Access Card (two counts), Relative to Access Device Fraud (one count), and Relative to Illegal Transmission of Monetary Funds (one count).

Slidell Regional Police Academy graduates Basic Reserve Academy

Man and His Dog Rescued from Lake Pontchartrain

Shortly before 2pm Monday (December 5th), STPSO received a call for help on Lake Pontchartrain, close to the Highway 11 bridge in Slidell.

A Picayune man, and his dog Remington, were fishing when the weather took a turn for the worse. Their boat capsized during the inclement weather leaving the man and Remington stranded in the middle of Lake Pontchartrain.

The STPSO Marine Division quickly responded and helped rescue the man and Remington. Both are in good health and grateful for the first responders.

Driver Cited in Fatal Cross Over Crash in Slidell

Sunday (December 4, 2016) evening, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle collision on Interstate 10 in Slidell that claimed the life of 25 year-old Ciara M. Lemon of Marrero.

The on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine that Kilian R. Webster Jr. (24) of Marrero lost control of his vehicle during a heavy rain storm.  After crossing into the opposing travel lane, Webster's vehicle was hit on the passenger side by Theresa A. Sanchez (31) of New Orleans.  

Despite being properly restrained at the time of the crash, Ciara Lemon, a passenger in Webster’s vehicle, sustained severe injuries and died at Oschner Medical Center-Northshore.  A 5 year-old in Webster’s vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was also transported to Oschner Medical Center-Northshore. Theresa A. Sanchez and two of her passengers were transported to Oschner Medical Center-Northshore, for treatment of minor injuries. 

Kilian R. Webster Jr. was cited for Careless Operation, Driving Under Suspension and No Child Restraint.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office advises that Aaron (or Arron) White (29) of Amite is not wanted as a non-compliant sex offender as reported in the original press release.  Mr. White was released from registering as a sex offender after completing his probation.   

Sex Offenders Wanted by TPSO for Non-Compliance

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Office has identified six individuals who are non-compliant sex offenders and have active warrants for their arrest.  These persons were convicted of certain sex offenses and are required by Louisiana State Law to register as a sex offender through the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Office if the violator lives within the Parish of Tangipahoa.

Tangipahoa Sex Offender Roundup Nets Eleven

On December 01, 2016, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Office conducted a “Sex Offender Roundup” with the assistance of Probation and Parole and arrested eleven non-compliant sex offenders.  The offenders are required to register through TPSO. 

The approximately 290 registered sex offenders living in Tangipahoa Parish are subject to periodic  compliance checks to ensure the safety of the community and that sex offenders are fully complying with all sex offender registration requirements.

Franklinton Man Indicted in Rape of 5-Year-Old

A Washington Parish grand jury indicted Lance J. Grandison (31) of Franklinton, Wednesday (November 29) of aggravated rape of a victim under 13.

Grandison is accused of raping a 5-year-old girl who was left in his care about five years ago. The victim, now 11, disclosed the rape to her mother, who contacted the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. Grandison was arrested on a warrant about seven months later.

St. Tammany Detectives Need Help Identifying Tire Slashers

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s detectives are looking for the individual(s) who damaged the tires on several vehicles in a Covington-area neighborhood over the weekend.  Several residents on Eighth Street near Covington woke up Sunday morning to find the tires on their vehicles had been slashed overnight.

A similar occurrence happened earlier this month at a Slidell-area apartment complex. Residents at the Lakeside Apartments, on Lakeshore Boulevard North near Slidell, woke up on Nov. 6 to find the tires on more than 30 vehicles in the apartment complex had been slashed overnight.

It is unknown at this time if the Slidell and Covington incidents are related.

Help Covington PD Identify These School Vandals

The Covington Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying two suspects responsible for vandalizing Covington High School sometime during the Thanksgiving Holidays. On November 25, 2016, school officials contacted the Covington Police Department, reporting that several areas of the school were spray painted with vulgarities. During the course of the investigation, school officials were able to review the surveillance footage, showing a white male and white female responsible for the vandalism. (See attached still shots obtained from the surveillance footage)

Slidell Man Sentenced for Operating a Ponzi Scheme

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced that JOHN SPOSATO (64) of Slidell, was sentenced Wednesday (November 30) for his role in promoting and operating a national Ponzi scheme.  Sposato was sentenced to 84 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $2,559,725 in restitution.

The press release says Sposato promoted numerous companies as investment entities that offered participants the chance to invest in various low-risk, high-reward investment vehicles, including international bank instruments, cutting edge oil remediation and recovery products, and real estate transactions.  SPOSATO told investors that the alleged investments were safe, secure, and never at risk.

SPOSATO did not actually invest the money but used it to make retail purchases for himself and his friends for various goods and services, including luxury items such as a new Chevrolet Camaro for one girlfriend and breast augmentation surgery for another girlfriend.  In total, between about January 2010, and April 2014, approximately forty-eight (48) individuals invested approximately $811,305 with SPOSATO and his companies.
