Franklinton Mayor and Board of Aldermen Meeting April 25, 2023

A lengthy meeting of the Franklinton Mayor and Board of Aldermen was held Tuesday (April 25, 2023) evening.

Washington Parish School System Superintendent Frances Varnado provided an update on the WPSS, describing student achievements, facilities being remodeled, enrollment information, testing that is ongoing, graduation information, and much more. See the video beginning at 3:50.

Brent Jones with the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office made a presentation regarding a proposal for consolidated dispatch of calls for service. Ideally, dispatching for all law enforcement and fire departments would be under one umbrella, the WPSO. Jones emphasized that consolidated dispatch is more efficient. Many questions were asked and after a lengthy discussion, the Board took the matter under consideration. See the video beginning at 15:40.

The Board addressed construction plans for facilities for the Police Department. A major part of the project is for training facilities. A lengthy discussion was held regarding architectural plans, what the department needs, funding, and alternatives (such as the old Armory building). No action was taken but further discussions regarding the matter will be had. See the video beginning at 44:40.

The Board held a lengthy discussion regarding the providers of wrecker service inside the Town of Franklinton. See the video beginning at 1:06:25

Bids were opened on properties advertised. See the video at 1:20:40.

  • For the property at 7.744 acres on Hwy. 16, one bid was received for $14,880.00. Following discussion, the bid was denied and the Board voted to re-advertise with a minimum bid of $25,000.00. 
  • For the property at 22096 Denise Road, three bids were received. The high bid by Wayne Shoemaker of $40,144.00 was accepted.

Mayor Route's closing comments were on the success of the recent cleanup event in the Town, the upcoming Watermelon Festival, and the upcoming National Day of Prayer event.
