Obituary

Evelyn Strahan Magee

April 5, 1923 - March 15, 2022

Evelyn Strahan Magee, age 98 and a resident of Franklinton, passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday morning March 15, 2022, three weeks shy of her 99th birthday. Evelyn was a longtime active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She was a prior member of First Baptist Church of Franklinton where she worked with the Sunbeams, Youth Groups, escorted young people to the Glorietta and Ridgecrest summer camps and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Evelyn was proudly a member of the Franklinton Women’s Club for 62 years. She loved to travel and had visited Japan, China, Europe, Australia and New Zealand but her favorite trip was to the Holy Land.

Evelyn lived her life for God and for her children and grandchildren, who affectionately called her Mont. She was happiest surrounded by her family and especially, as she got older, her beloved great-grandchildren. Mont was a faithful daughter to her mother and steadfast in her faith even through the loss of her son. Mont is remembered for her sweet nature, her kindness and devotion to her family.

She was married to the late Leeke L. Magee for 36 years and together they had three children: Cheryl Magee D’Antonio and husband Dr. Claude M. D’Antonio of Mandeville, the late Michael M. Magee, Jan Magee Verberne and husband Randy Verberne of Spokane, WA.

Mont will be forever sadly missed by her 8 grandchildren and their spouses: Jeffrey R. Erwin and Elissa K. Erwin, Michael L. Magee and Krystal Magee all of Mandeville, Skip Magee and Jessica Magee, Katelyn M. Howington and Brandon Howington, Victoria M. Locascio and Nick Locascio all of Covington, Lee Verberne and Jodi Verberne of Zurich, Switzerland, Kristen V. Bailey and Jeff Bailey of Seattle, WA, Neil Verberne of Ritzville, WA; Mont dearly loved each and every one of her 14 great-grandchildren: Ollya Magee Erwin, Geo Erwin, Kallee LaRosa, Milo Verberne, Chloe Magee, Bailey Hutzler, Hunter Magee, Cooper Magee, Beau Magee, Poppy Magee, Gabriel Howington, Wyatt Howington, Hallie Mae Locascio, Kasen Hayes Locascio. Mont is also survived by her former daughter in law JoEllen Gully, who spent many hours over the years visiting with and taking care of her and who Mont loved as a daughter.

She was also preceded in death by her mother Ollie Taylor Strahan Jenkins, father Flemon R. Strahan and brother William A. “Bill” Strahan.

The family’s deepest gratitude and thanks to Jauan King, Teresa Creel, Teresa Jones, Shirley Talley, Toni Oswald and Bernice Crain for taking such loving care of Mont that it enabled her wish a reality to remain in her home throughout the end of her life. Special thanks to Shirley Talley for over 30 years of faithful care, service and friendship.

A graveside funeral service will be held in Ellis Cemetery at 3:00 pm Sunday March 20th with Rev. Daryl Dunigan officiating. A eulogy will be provided by Tammy Magee Magruder and special music by Alan Stafford.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations to assist the children and people of the Ukraine during their time of crisis. Donations can be made at www.support.crs.org or www.savethechildren.org

Pallbearers: Jeffrey R. Erwin, Michael L. Magee, Skip C. Magee, Neil Verberne, Brandon Howington, Nick Locascio
