On May 5, 2026 at around 11:57 PM, officers from the Hammond Police Department witnessed a shooting into a crowd in the North Cate Street area. Two were injured.
Multiple suspects were identified who fled the area in a vehicle. Officers initiated a pursuit, which ended when the suspects' vehicle crashed. One of the suspects was injured during the crash and the others were taken into custody. At this time, the driver of the vehicle is unknown.
Multiple firearms were seized, including some that had been modified to function as fully-automatic weapons using a “switch.”
The following individuals were arrested:
- Cariwon Finley, 26 years old of Hammond, for Principal to attempted second degree homicide, Illegal use of a dangerous weapon, and Unlawful handling of machine guns
- Altavian Baldwin, 25 years old of Independence, for Illegal use of a dangerous weapon, Illegal carrying of a dangerous weapon with a controlled dangerous substance, Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Principal to attempted second degree homicide, and Possession of marijuana
- Cordell Jackson, 21 years old of Independence, for Principal to attempted second degree homicide, Possession of marijuana, and Illegal carrying of a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance
- Altrevia Byrd, 24 years old of Independence, for Principal to attempted second degree homicide, Possession of marijuana, and Illegal carrying of a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance

“This is yet another example of young individuals who fear no consequence for their actions. This situation had a huge potential for loss of life if it were not for the quick actions of all our officers who were on scene when it occurred,” said Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr.
