Obituary

Rev. Charlie Parker

June 6, 1954 - August 31, 2025

Charlie, born on June 6, 1954, was the fourth child of Robert and Ruby (Payton) Parker, Sr. He was educated in the Bogalusa City Schools System and was a proud graduate of the Class of 1972. His thirst for knowledge and his industrious nature led him to enlist in the United States Air Force. After receiving an honorable discharge, he became manager of Church’s Fried Chicken in Bogalusa. A few years later he managed a Church’s Store in New Orleans. During this time he met and married Doris Hewitt, from whom two sons were born: Charlie, Jr. and Brandon. He left Church’s, moved his family and his mother to Mississippi, and worked for Popeye’s Fried Chicken. After the death of his mother, he returned to New Orleans where he was employed as a supervisor for the United States Postal Service.

It was after he was injured on this job, he chose to retire in his hometown. Upon returning her became active in his “family church”, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, which was once pastored by his grandfather, Rev. Charlie L. Parker, Sr.  He made sure he and his family members were aware of the purpose of proposed local taxes and laws. It was also during this time that he married Joan Porter, from whom one child was born, Natalie.

In December 2018, Charlie married Tammy Henry and later adopted his grandson, Myzi.  He continued to serve as the Associated-Pastor of Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church until January 2019, with the guidance and blessings of Pastor Mims and acceptance of Pastor James Magee, they joined Sweet Beulah Baptist Church, where he served as an assistant to Pastor James Magee. After the death of Pastor Magee the members of Sweet Beulah chose him as their pastor. His installation on held on February 20, 2022.

Whether he resided in New Orleans or Bogalusa, Charlie loved entertaining family and friends.  It could be a group of six or a group of sixty, he was known to be a pleasant host. He would do the cooking, or most of the cooking; because according to him, he was the best cook in the world. There were several dishes he prepared his family and friends looked forward to enjoying. It can also be said, should the need arise, he not only warmly entertained favor and friends, bury also provided shelter when needed.

Charlie leaves to cherish memories: his wife, Tammy; sons, Charlie, Jr. (Taja), Brandon, Christopher (Lacey) & Myzi; step-sons, James and Jimmy; daughter, Natalie; step-daughters, Janae (raised as his own), & Yvette (Shannon); 20 grandchildren & 6 great-grandchildren. His siblings, Debra & Frank (Stephanie); nephews, nieces and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Robert & Ruby (Payton) Parker, Sr., and siblings: Diane P. Washington, and John, Robert, Jr., Julius, Sr.
