Laura Jo Knox Schilling
July 7, 1954 - July 15, 2025
Laura Jo Knox Schilling, age 71 and a resident of Mount Hermon, passed away early Tuesday morning July 15, 2025 at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She was a native of Alabama, born on July 7, 1954 and grew up there before moving with her family to New Orleans as a teenager. Laura obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS and had a long career as a Registered Nurse. She was an Intensive Care Unit charge nurse at East Jefferson General Hospital for over 30 years, where she trained, mentored and encouraged countless new nurses through the years, who often referred to as “L.J.” During this time Laura was recognized as a Top 100 nurse, an honor she was always very proud of. After her service at East Jeff, she worked at smaller hospitals closer to home before retiring. Laura, alongside her husband, supported her community by bringing into their home and helping raise many children that needed a more stable life and upbringing. She never met a stranger and was always willing to help those in need. Laura enjoyed traveling with her best friends Jerry and Cathy Dykes and had visited the Great Smoky Mountains many times. She also enjoyed shopping and spending time with her family and friends.
Survived by: Sons and Daughters in law: Benjamin and Keri Blades, Wayne and Summer Blades, Jeremy and Lesley Blades, Kimberly Blades; Grandchildren: Dylan and Robin Clark, Tiffany Blades, Kolbi Blades, Benson Blades, Breland Bridges, Erica Cameron; Great-grandchildren: Alaina Demars, Landan Newman, Luke Clark; Sister and Brother in law: Susan and Adrian Wallace; Brother and Sister in law: Tim and Valeri Knox; Niece and Nephew: Stevie Marie Knox, Zachary Knox; Special Friends: Jerry and Cathy Dykes; Also numerous extended family members, co-workers and friends
She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years William R. “Billy” Schilling, parents Jimmie Earl Knox and Patti Wooten Knox, brother Jimmie Knox, Jr. and other family members.
Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home (1109 Bene Street, Franklinton) on Saturday July 19th from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 am Saturday with Rev. Calvin Crowe officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery (25393 Mt. Pisgah Road, Mt. Hermon).
