Rita Brumfield Clayton

July 21, 1929 - December 1, 2024

Rita Brumfield Clayton, age 95, passed away at her home in Bogalusa, LA, December 1, 2024. Mrs. Clayton was a veteran of the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, where she served as a surgeon nurse. After her service with the military, she continued to serve her community as a registered nurse for well over 70 years. She was a member at Plainview Baptist Church and also a member of the local Garden Club. As much as she loved gardening and watching birds, nothing compared to the love she had for the Washington Parish Free Fair and Mardi Gras.

Mrs. Clayton is survived by one son: John Adam Clayton (Terri); two daughters: Effie Elaine Clayton and Mary Nell Clayton; six grandchildren: Michele Sword-Clayton (Melissa), Denise Sexson (Jeremy), Megan Clayton, Otis Ewell, Jr. (Christy), Phyllis Ewell, and Eli Clayton; numerous great-grandchildren; one sister: Hilda Ross; a daughter-in-law: Sherry Clayton; two sisters-in-law: Kathy Brumfield and Annette Brumfield; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Murphy Jay Clayton, Jr.; two sons: Michael Jay Clayton and Kenneth Martin Clayton; a granddaughter: Bridget Stogner; her parents: Martin and Gracie Brumfield; four brothers: William “Bill” Brumfield, Victor Brumfield, Frank Brumfield, and Robert “Bobby” Brumfield; and three sisters: Mary Evelyn Sims, Francis Ann Bennett, and Patsy D. Brumfield.

Services will be at Brown-McGehee Funeral Home in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Public Viewing will be on December 6, 2024 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM and resume on December 7, 2024 from 10:00 AM until the Funeral Service at 12:00 PM. Interment will be at Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.
