On November 6, 2024, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on US Hwy 190 near Park Place Drive in St. Tammany Parish. The crash claimed the life of 38-year-old Jonathan H. Janise of Denham Springs.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Janise traveled into the eastbound lanes of US Hwy 190 from the median. At the same time, a 2014 Peterbilt 389 was traveling eastbound on US Hwy 190. For reasons still under investigation, the Peterbilt struck Janise in the center lane.
Janise sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Peterbilt, who was restrained, was uninjured. Impairment is not suspected on the part of the Peterbilt driver, who provided a breath sample of 0.000g%. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Janise for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
Both pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain vigilant while on roadways and to pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should avoid walking on roadways in dark areas. Pedestrians must assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Pedestrians should cross roadways in well-lit, designated areas and always walk facing traffic. These simple steps can help enhance safety for pedestrians.
