June 28, 1925 - September 3, 2024
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
Mr. Royan Burris, a cherished and devoted father, civil rights activist, and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024, at the age of 99 in Baton Rouge, LA. Born on June 18, 1925, to the marital union of Isaac “Ike” Burris and Vanda Crain in Franklinton, LA. He was the eighth of nine children. Royan accepted Christ at a young age. His deep sense of justice and commitment to his faith were instilled in him from an early age, shaping the course of his remarkable life.
As a young man, Royan moved to New Orleans, where he graduated from barber college. He later settled in Bogalusa, where he met and married Eva Burris. Their paths eventually diverged. In 1977 Royan found lasting love with Brenda Williams Burris, his devoted wife until his passing. Together, they built a life rooted on love, resilience, and faith.
A staunch believer in justice, Royan became a founding member of the Deacons for Defense and Justice, eventually serving as its vice president and president. This organization was pivotal during the Civil Rights Movement, protecting African American communities from violence and ensuring that peaceful protests could take place without fear. Royan's leadership played an essential role in safeguarding the fight for equality and justice, leaving a lasting impact on the movement and its history.
Royan’s dedication to civil rights extended well beyond his involvement with the Deacons for Defense and Justice. He was a constant advocate for justice, equality, and unity, leaving an enduring legacy on all who were fortunate to know him. His strength, wisdom, and unwavering belief in the dignity of all people will be remembered for generations.
Royan was raised in Sweet Home Church of Christ and later became a member of Greater Salter Chapel AME Church, where his faith continued to guide him throughout his life.
He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind a loving wife, children, grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
May his memory forever be a blessing.
