A Message from Our Animal Shelter
August 8th was the Washington Parish Animal Shelter's 5 year anniversary. Can you believe it is already or has only been five years!!!! Within those five years the shelter has come so far. Here are some data points to show what the shelter, staff, and volunteers have achieved.
- The shelter has taken in over 2000 animals from the public with over 90% of those animals being adopted out.
- We have transported over 1000 animals with the assistance of many different local and national organizations.
- In August 2020 the shelter began a low-cost spay/ neuter clinic and with in those four years we have altered between 700 (our lowest year) and 1000 felines and canines every year, this does not include the work done for the parish by the Washington Humane Society for animals in Washington Parish. We were also able to partner with Mardi Paws to have 80 canines altered at no cost to the public.
- The shelter went from a staff of 1 to a staff of 5 in these years, and between all, staff members hold over 30 certificates and licenses.
- WPAS has donated 1000s of pounds of food back in to the public for assistance. With a donation from Jenny Lazo & Associates we were recently able to open a Kibble Kottage which hold free resources for the public with food donations.
- Passed our State inspection 6 different times.
- Hosted many local adoption and community events.
- The shelter was awarded in both 22 and 23 for having a lifesaving rate of over 90%.
- The shelter has been recently offering free puppy and kitten vaccines to the public.
- We have recently expanded our volunteer hours to Saturdays from 9am. to 12pm.
We are so grateful to Washington Parish Government, the public, or volunteers, and all who work and support the continuing growth of the Washington Parish Animal Shelter.
