In the early morning hours of Friday, July 12, 2024, the Covington Police Department attempted to pull over a vehicle following suspicious activity in a residential area. The vehicle, which was driving without lights in a residential area – a tactic sometimes employed during burglaries – failed to pull over and instead fled at a high rate of speed. The pursuit ended up on I-12 into Tangipahoa Parish and then onto I-55 north with Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputies and Louisiana State Police joining.
The vehicle ultimately came to a stop near Wardline Road in the Hammond area where five occupants, all wearing masks and gloves, ran from the vehicle. The 16-year-old female was taken into custody on scene. The remaining four male teenage suspects were located and taken into custody at various locations in the parish over the course of several hours following the incident. It was later learned the vehicle used in the incident had been reported stolen from Tangipahoa Parish the day before.
While this investigation remains ongoing, Sheriff Gerald Sticker is grateful to our partner agencies for their collaboration to end the pursuit safely for all involved and proud of the TPSO Criminal Investigations team for working quickly to locate and arrest all suspects involved.
The Covington Police Department is actively investigating this incident and charges are pending. Residents who believe they may have been the victim of a burglary in the West 30's community in Covington are asked to call 985 892-8500.
