In a Facebook post this morning (July 15, 2024) Mayor Tyrin Z. Truong posted the following:
“This morning, I am excited to announce to the City that I have chosen Mr. James “Smitty” Smith as the next Chief of the Bogalusa Police Department. Mr. Smith is a 28 year veteran of the department. Many in the community affectionately know him as “RoboCop” because of his reputation of being firm but fair. During his time on the force, he served as the Internal Affairs Officer—helping hold his fellow officers accountable. He was also one of only two community policing officers, going into neighborhoods other officers refused to go to. Mr Smith is a veteran, having served in the United States Army. Upon confirmation, he will become the department’s first African American chief in its 110 year history. The Administration looks forward to the leadership he will bring to policing in Bogalusa. Together, we will take a more community-centric approach geared toward continuing to drop our homicide rate, keeping officers visible, and fostering a better relationship with the youth of our city. Please join me tomorrow night at City Hall at 5:30 to support this historic nomination.”
The nomination requires City Council approval. Though not on the Tuesday (July 16, 2024) Agenda, the matter will apparently be added.
