Monday (March 25, 2024) morning, shortly after 6:45 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on LA Hwy 40 near Brennon Lane in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 59-year-old Clayton Ard of Loranger.
The initial investigation revealed that Ard was southbound on LA Hwy 40 on a bicycle. At the same time, a 2018 Hyundai Sonata was also southbound on LA Hwy 40 behind the bicycle. For reasons still under investigation, the Hyundai impacted the bicycle.
Ard sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Hyundai was properly restrained and was uninjured. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind bicyclists to never assume that a motorist can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are vital in preventing crashes and avoiding injuries. Louisiana law requires bicyclists to remain as close to the right side of the roadway as practicable and obey all traffic laws. Troopers would also like to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted, follow all traffic laws, and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained.
