One Dead, One Injured After Shots Fired at Basketball Game in Bogalusa

The Bogalusa Police Department has reported that on Thursday (January 11, 2024) night, BPD Officers working a basketball game at Bogalusa High School heard numerous gunshots coming from the area of M.J. Israel Dr and Avenue B.

Officers responded and located two black male subjects suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began administering first aid, requested EMS and began securing the scene. 

Both subjects, identified as juveniles, were transported to Our Lady of the Angels hospital for treatment. One of the gunshot victims (apparently from Bogalusa) died from his injuries. The other subject is currently being treated by hospital staff.

The Bogalusa Police Department requests anyone with information to please call 985-732-3611 and asks that you keep these families in your prayers.

Bogalusa Mayor Tyrin Z. Truong posted the following:

"My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends affected by the tragic incident outside the basketball game tonight at BHS. We are working closely with law enforcement to investigate the circumstances. Our community stands together in grief, and we will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of our residents at public events. If you or someone you know is in need of counseling, please see the high school guidance counselor or call Debra Young, Director for Children & Family Success at City Hall (985) 732-6200."

Bogalusa High School posted the following:

"The Bogalusa City Schools family is deeply saddened to inform our school community of the tragic incident that occurred during a basketball game tonight, resulting in the loss of one of our students and the injury of another one. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this devastating loss. Our top priorities are the well-being and safety of our students and spectators, and we are working closely with local authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident. To the Covington Lions, your safety was our top priority, and we appreciate your patience. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to everyone impacted by this tragedy and will do everything possible to assist and support those in need."
