Obituary

Carolyn Martin Cromer

August 18, 1934 - January 15, 2024

Carolyn Martin Cromer, age 89, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024. Although she will be dearly missed as a beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Carolyn’s passing also marks a joyous reunification between her and her husband of 65 years, George Cromer, Jr., who recently preceded her in death.

Carolyn was born on August 18, 1934 to Frankie and Liston “Pop” Martin in Mandeville, LA. She graduated from Bogalusa High School and worked at United Gas Company for a short time before starting her family. Carolyn lived a most peaceful and content life in Bogalusa, LA, where she was a member of Superior Avenue Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, George Gregory “Greg” (Peggy) Cromer of Slidell; her daughter, Lori Cromer (Bryan) Voth of Baton Rouge; her sister, Verna Gaye Talley of Bogalusa; her grandchildren, Carolyn Nicole “Niki” Cromer, George Clayton “Clay” (Erica) Cromer, Bryant Martin (Alyssa) Voth, Leah Catherine (Eric) Morvant; and her great-grandchildren, Stephen Bech, Jr., George Orson Cromer, Maeve Cromer, Bowman Voth, and Rose Voth.

The oldest of three girls, Carolyn enjoyed spending time with her younger sisters and extended family—each of whom had a favorite dish cooked by their “Aunt Carolyn” or “Mimi.” She was a warm and constant presence in her grandchildren’s lives, and from sporting events to dance recitals, she cheerfully supported their countless activities.

Carolyn met George Cromer, a transplant from West Virginia, in the summer of 1956. The two married in June 1957 and were blessed with 65 wonderful years together. Carolyn would often remark on his passing by saying that she felt as though half of her was gone. Her friends and family take comfort in knowing that she feels whole again in heaven alongside the love of her life.

In addition to reuniting with her husband, Carolyn will also join her brother, L. F. Martin, III, her parents, and her sister, Sylvia Martin Cothern, in eternal rest.

A service to celebrate Carolyn’s life will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024. Visitation will start at 11:00 AM, with the funeral service to follow at 1:30 PM in the chapel of Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home. Rev. Clay Norwood will officiate the service, with the entombment to be held at the Sanctuary of Peace Mausoleum in Ponemah Cemetery.
