Obituary

Marcia Bateman Magee

December 6, 1936 - September 26, 2023

Marcia Lynn Bateman Magee died early in the morning on September 26, 2023.

She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Magee Burris and Denise Magee, her sister Shirley Bateman Morgan, her son-in-law, Michael Burris, her grandchildren Allison Burris Six, Jason Husser, Beck Troutman (husband of the late Jessica Husser Troutman), and Elizabeth Burris and their families including her beloved great-grandchildren--Collins (12), Carter (12), Charlie (9), Mary Hannah (5), Maeve (3), and Zephyr (1), as well as many nieces and nephews.

Marcia lived a gentle life of prayer group meetings, family dinners, kept appointments, and shared cups of coffee. Her refrigerator was covered in great grandchildren's photos, exhaustive lists of family birthdays, and phone numbers of all her friends written on 3x5 notecards. She loved doling out food to anyone under the weather, going to the library, and watching LSU. She loved tracking hurricanes. She loved red lipstick. She loved the nightly news. She was tenderhearted and sensitive to the suffering of others. She tried to alleviate pain. No one will ever be as sympathetic to a baby teething or head congestion as she was. No one will ever be a sympathetic to a broken heart as she was.

She can perhaps be best remembered "visiting" with Shirley and Mary, Kim and Denise, neighbors and friends, her grandchildren--coffee cups all around and old stories flowing. She can perhaps be even better remembered in the days before her beloved granddaughter Jessica died of ALS, in the Thanksgiving dinners with her giblet gravy that no one else could ever master, her cornbread dressing, her pecan pies and everyone together. She was a marker for her family a time quickly fading--time for porch swings, newsprint, Big Red gum, and a fresh pot of coffee dripping. She never locked her door.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Otto Magee, Jr., her parents Robert and Letha Bateman, and her granddaughter, Jessica Husser Troutman. She was looking forward to those reunions and now there is no more waiting.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home Saturday September 30th from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 am Saturday with Rev. Frederick Brumfield and Jason Husser officiating. Burial will follow in Ellis Cemetery.
