Huey P. Kennedy

November 20, 1943 - June 18, 2023

Mr. Huey P. Kennedy, age 79, passed away in Hammond, LA on Sunday, June 18, 2023. He was born November 20th, 1943, in Angie, Louisiana and was a resident of Bogalusa. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend to many.

Huey was the second youngest of 10 children and had 4 brothers and 5 sisters. He worked on the family farm as a child, milking dairy cows with other family members. He was an avid basketball player at Angie High School. He attended one year at Nichols State University in Thibodaux, LA and tried out for the basketball team. He returned to Bogalusa and worked at National Food Store as a butcher and produce manager until he obtained a maintenance job at Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill which is now International Paper. He was considered to be the best or one of the best pipefitters to ever work in the mill.  Huey was also an avid tennis player, where he won many awards in singles and doubles play. He loved to be around people his whole life and used his skills as a great cook many times for others.

Huey married his wife, Kathy Bowman Kennedy, in June of 1985. He spent much time camping and fishing on the Pearl River where he enjoyed good times with friends. He and others taught his son and other boys many lessons of life during those times on the river. Huey also loved saltwater fishing and spent many weekends fishing with his son and daughter-in-law at his camp in Pearlington, Mississippi, until Hurricane Katrina destroyed their camp.

Huey was a stroke and cancer survivor. He battled through many challenges in life, and his perseverance, determination, and positive outlook always allowed him to overcome obstacles.

Huey is survived by his wife, Kathy Bowman Kennedy, his son Jefferi Thomas Dickens (Misty) of Bogalusa, and his grandsons, Jacob and James Dickens. Also, he is survived by his brother and sister, Edward Earl Kennedy (Sharon) and Dorothy “Dottie” Kennedy Woodward, and sister in-law Clara Kennedy, and so many nieces and nephews.

Huey was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe Hamilton Kennedy and Mary Elizabeth Chadwick Kennedy; and his sisters and brothers, Golda Evie Kennedy Singley, Doris Marie Kennedy Weaver, Delores Leavana Kennedy Phillips, Dolly Louise Kennedy Hopgood, Samuel Thomas “S.T.” Kennedy, Robert Joe “R.J.” Kennedy, William Douglas “W.D.” Kennedy.

Services will be held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa, LA on Monday, June 26, 2023. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until time for the service at 7:00 P.M. with Rev.  Larry Mizell officiating the service.

Pallbearers will be Keith Kennedy, Ed Smith, Matt Seale, Stamper Scott, Chris Williams, Jacob Dickens and James Dickens.
