Mental Health Crisis Blamed for Two Mandeville Deaths

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith reports that a shooting incident on Sunday (June 12, 2022) night near Mandeville, and that resulted in two persons dead from gunshot wounds, was the result of a mental health crisis.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a residence in the 2000 block of Dupre Street near Mandeville in response to a report of a shooting. There were two victims. One was pronounced dead on the scene by medical personnel, and a second was transported to an area hospital with a gunshot wound.

Through their follow-up investigation and in working with the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, STPSO detectives have determined two men were at the residence when one suffered what is believed to have been a mental health crisis and shot the other man before fatally shooting himself.

“This is an absolute tragedy for all parties involved,” Sheriff Smith said. “Unfortunately, mental health is a real issue in our community, but I want everyone to know there are resources, including our Crisis Intervention Team, available to them. If you are in crisis or know someone who is please call the suicide hotline, 211, or call 911. Help is available.”
