Joseph William Harper

July 31, 1937 - April 11, 2022

Joseph William Harper, age 84 and of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away on April 11, 2022, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Born in July 1937 in Bogalusa, LA to parents Jesse Harper and Virginia Frazier Seiler, he was known lovingly as “Buck" to all who knew him in his hometown. He attended Chamberlin Hunt Academy in Port Gibson, MS before enlisting in the United States Army. After college, he began a long and successful career with the Port of New Orleans. During his tenure, Joe, served as President of the Steamship Association and retired from Ports America and New Orleans Terminal as Senior Vice President. Joe became a licensed private pilot as an adult; earning licenses to fly private and commercial planes. As an avid aviation enthusiast, he developed a deep appreciation for flying and the history of aviation.

Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janice McDonald Harper; a son, Mark Harper; daughter in law, Angelle Harper; granddaughters, Elia Harper and Summer Harper; brother, David Harper; sister-in-law Cheryl Harper; nieces, Stacey Bierman and Christie Nowotny; brother-in-law, Keith Jones; nephew, Matson Blocker; brother-in-law, Paul McDonald; sister-in-law, Juanita McDonald; nephew, Paul McDonald; and niece, Laura Barwick.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Donna Jones; his paternal grandparents, William M. Harper and Lucy G. Harper; and maternal grandparents, Bailey Frazier and Nola M. Frazier.

A private graveside service will take place April 24,2022, at Ponemah Cemetery in Bogalusa, LA.
