Robert Carey Bateman

September 10, 1932 - November 19, 2021

Robert Carey Bateman, age 89, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021. A Washington Parish native, Carey was born to the late Robert H. Bateman and Sadie Sylvest Bateman. 

He is survived by his wife of 66 years Marie Gennaro Bateman, sons and daughters in law Dr. Robert Carey Bateman Jr and Maureen Bateman, Rodney Michael Bateman and Cecily Bateman, daughter and son in law Juhn Marie Bateman Green and Dick Green, grandchildren and spouses Richard Carey Green (Valerie), Anne Marie Bettencourt (Jerry), Robert Michael Bateman, Samuel Paul Bateman, Drs. Marjorie Elizabeth Bateman (Erik), and great grandchildren Bateman, Louis, Riley, Vera, Walter, James, Marietta, Rebecca, and Heidi.

Carey graduated from Franklinton High School, Pearl River Junior College, and Southeastern Louisiana University. He served two years in the US Army with 16 months spent in Korea. Carey retired after 40 years as a successful Allstate Insurance salesman. He was also a licensed real estate agent and Notary Public. Carey served on the Washington-St Tammany Electric Coop Board of Directors since May 2003.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Franklinton and the Fellowship Sunday School class. He is a past member of the Franklinton Jaycees, Rotary Club, and Chamber of Commerce as well as the National Wild Turkey Federation, the NRA, Washington Parish Farm Bureau, and the Washington Parish Forestry Association. He was an avid sportsman and spent all available time outdoors.

Visitation will be from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm Monday November 22nd at First Baptist Church of Franklinton (903 Cleveland Street, Franklinton). A funeral service will be held in the church at 2:00 pm Monday with Dr. Cody Warren and Rev. Joey Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Ellis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church bereavement committee (950 Self Street, Franklinton).

Pallbearers will be Vincent Magliolo, Jim Morgan, Jimmy Stafford, Richard Carey Green, Jerry Bettencourt, Robert Michael Bateman, and Sam Bateman.

Honorary pallbearers are close friend Bob O’Brien and the Fellowship Sunday School class members Richard Morgan, Bill Jenkins, Randy Magee, Tommy Arthur, Darrell Rester, James Harold Penny, Carley Stokes, Dick Parish, and Warren Cook.
