Parish Council Hears of Animal Shelter Accomplishments

Washington Parish Animal Shelter Manager Kelsey Knight (beginning at 3:30 into video of the meeting) presented a report to the Parish Council Monday (August 23, 2021) that included accomplishments since the shelter opened in the summer of 2019 at 23046 Yacc Road (at the intersection with LA. State Hwy. 10, between Franklinton and Bogalusa). Click here for the Animal Shelter's Facebook page and the latest information. Also, click here for previous articles related to the animal shelter.

Knight provided a visual presentation and information on facility improvements, care provided to animals at the shelter, events held at the shelter, publicity received, success in adopting-out the animals (567 dogs since April, 2021), and much more. In addition, Knight reported that the shelter will have its first spay and neuter procedures on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. Spay and neuter services will soon be open to the public at low cost for residents of Washington Parish. This has been made possible by a $10,000 grant from the Humane Society of Louisiana which paid for all necessary surgical equipment.

Knight announced the "Cupcakes and Canines" event to be held on September 3, 2021, an event that includes free pupcakes (cupcakes for your pets), low cost vaccinations, microchipping, paw print painting, and local vendors.

In other business (beginning at 13:45 into video of the meeting), the Council approved two ordinances, introduced one ordinance, and adopted four resolutions.

President Thomas reported (beginning at 20:15 into video of the meeting) COVID-19 Washington Parish statistics and efforts to improve broadband availability. Finance Director Graham, Public Works Director Wheat, Transportation Supervisor Merritt, and Alex Sumrall provided additional updates for the Administration.

Council Chairman Reginald McMasters announced that, at least the next two Council meetings will be held by Zoom only.
