Nellie V. Hayes

March 19, 1932 - January 29, 2021

Thy Will…

Nellie V. Hayes was born on March 13, 1932 in Franklinton, LA to the late Velma A. and Shelton Magee, and the oldest of two. She accepted Christ in her life at an early age.

Be Done…

On January 29, 2021, she was called to her eternal home.

She was born and raised in the church, she attended and held membership at Payne Memorial AME Church where she served on Usher Board #3 for several years. She worked in the family business of cosmetology at Magee’s Beauty Salon for over 30 years. During her retirement, she sold Tupperware. She was a member of several social & pleasure clubs; She traveled as a member of a travel club and enjoyed every minute of it.

Nellie started school in Washington Parish and finish in Orleans Parish. She attended Katie’s Cosmetology School and completed several college courses through the OIC program. She also served a member of the Eastern Star Association at Prince Hall.

She was married to the Late John H. Myers and to that union she was blessed with 5 children, John Mitchell, Donald Ray, Cynthia LaVern, Shelton O’Neal, and Freddie Edward Myers.

Later, she married the late Charles Hayes and acquired two stepsons who loved her dearly Darrin and Jeffery Hayes. She was also loved and respected by our extended family and our brother Kevin “Papoose” Lawrence.

Nellie was known by many as the woman who would tell it like it is. She did not have a problem with being honest about the way she felt about a topic, place, or thing. She was known as Maw Maw Nellie, grandma and Mama. She loved being around her family because it would be nothing but laughter, fun, and entertainment ahead. As a family, we knew that once we came together, it would be nothing but a good time no matter what was going on in the real world.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Cynthia L. Joseph; sons, Shelton O. and Freddie E. Myers; daughters-in-law, Cheryl Myers and Adeline Magee; her adopted daughter, Latrice Hill; 22 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 3 great-great granddaughters, a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives including her extended family and friends.

Nellie was preceded in death by her sons, John Mitchell and Donald Ray Myers; parents, Velma and Shelton Magee, brother, George E. Ivy; and adopted sister, Charlene Johnson.

A drive through viewing will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021 from 2:00PM until 3:00PM at Crain and Sons Funeral Home - Franklinton.

A Viewing will be held Saturday, January 6, 2021 at The Boyd Family Funeral Home, 5001 Chef Menteur Hwy, New Orleans, LA from 9:00AM until 10:00AM with a funeral service to follow at 10:00AM with Rev. Troy Williams, Pastor Officiating. 

Crain and Sons Funeral Home - Franklinton are in charge of arrangements.
