Obituary

Betty Durr

October 30, 1955 - August 31, 2020

A woman committed to serving God’s purpose, saw purpose to be of service to God, her family, her community and church. That was the embodiment of Betty Delores (Phillips) Durr. Betty was born in Wiggins, Mississippi on October 30,1955 to the late Reverend Elijah J Phillips and Mary Lillie (John) Phillips. The providential hand of our God moved upon Betty on August 31, 2020 and she went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 

Surrendering her heart to Jesus at a young age, Betty joined Triumph Missionary Church in Poplarville, Mississippi. She later united with Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness when she relocated to Franklinton, Louisiana with her family. Betty was a devoted member of various ministries in the church and she loved to sing in the choir.

Betty graduated from Poplarville High School in Poplarville, Mississippi. She had many lifelong friends who she kept in contact with until her death. Betty enjoyed staying in touch with family and friends. Many looked forward to telephone calls or visits from her as she cherished close relationships with family and friends.

Her professional career included working for many years at Franklinton Junior High School as a Food Service Worker. Betty enjoyed cooking. She also enjoyed sharing recipes with her family and friends. Anyone who received a recipe from Betty could expect a follow-up phone call to ask, “How did it turn out?” She cooked with love and prepared meals to specification for her husband and sons.

On July 22, 1976, Betty married Buford Durr Sr., affectionately known as Jack. Betty was a loving and devoted wife for over 39 years. To their union three sons were born, Buford Durr Jr., Jeremy Brian Durr, and Jason Durr, all of Franklinton, Louisiana. Betty was a supportive mother, wife and caretaker during her husband’s illness. 

Betty was preceeded in death by her husband, Buford (Jack) Durr Sr.; her parents, Reverend Elijah J. Phillips and Mary Lillie (John) Phillips; four brothers, Elijah Phillips, Ulysses Roy Phillips, Lester Earl Phillips, Walter David Phillips and three sisters, Evelyn Lynn Phillips, Barbara (Phillips) Tillman, Carolyn (Phillips) Barnes.

Those who will forever cherish her memory include her brother, Reverend Frank (Barbara) Phillips of Riverside, California; five sisters, Dorothy (George) Lewis of Tracey, California, Margo (Robert) Porter of Picayune, Mississippi, Wanda Bradshaw, Burnetta (Gordon) Travis, and Tina (Oliver) Silas all of Gulfport, Mississippi; one brother-in-law, Reverend George R. Tillman, of Carriere, Mississippi; four sisters-in-law, Lillie Ruth May of Jackson, Mississippi, Alice Pearl Williams of Bassfield, Mississippi, Bobbie Youngblood of DeSoto, Texas, Gwen Bristo of Atlanta, Georgia, and Lillian Durr of Jacksonville, North Carolina; a Godson, Kevin J. May, II of Jackson, Mississippi; a very dear friend, Mary McCullen of Franklinton, LA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Drive-Through Viewing will be on September 4, 2020 from 2 PM to 7 PM at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton, Louisiana. The Funeral Service will be September 5, 2020 at 1 PM at Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness USA in Franklinton.
