Obituary

Madis Carolyn Martin Russell
October 21, 1940 - August 26, 2018

Madis Carolyn Martin Russell was born October 21, 1940 to loving parents Robert and Mamie Martin, Sr. in Franklinton, LA.
She was a member of Winan United Methodist Church. Madis graduated from Washington Parish High School in 1958. She then graduated from Cosmetology school in Baton Rouge, LA and later graduated from Truck Driving school in California. Madis spent the next few years living in Chicago, New Orleans, California, and finally relocated back to Franklinton where she was then employed with the Washington Parish School Board at Franklinton High School until she retired. She then rejoined Winan United Methodist Church.
Madis was loved by her family and friends and always had a joke to share to keep those around her laughing. She was a great cook who loved preparing food for her family as well as sharing her recipes to those who needed them. Madis had a green thumb and could revive a plant that was thought to be gone with little effort. Her students loved her and many attributed her to the reason they stayed in school and didn’t quit. She could be depended on to provide words of wisdom and encouragement to her family when needed and spent hours on the phone providing support to many. Known as “Carolyn” to her family, she could give you a whipping and hand out candy at the same time with lots of love.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters; Glenda Watts (Noel Watts, Sr.) of Tucson, AZ, Jamella Magee (Charles “Moe” Magee) of Franklinton; one step-son, Eric Russell of California. Also five sisters; Clementine Simmons, Delores Cooper, Patricia Brooks all of Illinois, Mattie Lee Shanks and Bette Walters both of Franklinton; one brother, Robert Martin, Jr., of Illinois; ten grandchildren; Noel Watts, Jr. of New Orleans, LA, Takeshi, Latoya, and Brandon Watts all of Tucson, AZ, Latifah and George Fleming of New Orleans, LA, Stacy and Tracy Fleming of Mandeville, LA, Territa Fleming of Chicago, IL, and Dieja Dykes of Alabama; thirteen great-grandchildren; a special friend, Lionel Vernon; and a host of relatives and friends who lives she touched dearly while here.
Madis was preceeded in death by her parents; a sister Roberta Greene; her former husband Leroy Russell; her son Jonathon Fleming; and her great-grandson Corey Mutin, Jr.
