Bogalusa Independence from Tobacco Campaign Proclamation

In recognition of Bogalusa’s Smoke-Free Ordinance 1 Year Anniversary, and as part of the continual efforts to improve the quality of life and promote healthy lifestyles in our community, Mayor Wendy Perrette, Bogalusa Strong and the Bogalusa Mayor Wellness Council proclaims the City of Bogalusa Independence from Tobacco City-Wide Campaign.

Chewing tobacco and smoking are not only deadly to our Bogalusa residents but also cause immediate illness and long-term suffering. Tobacco in any form is dangerous, addictive, and contains 28 cancer-causing ingredients. 1 in 4 Bogalusa residents smoke or chew tobacco leading to our family and friends dying prematurely and suffering unnecessarily. Bogalusa and Washington Parish health determinants are some of the highest in the state ranking 63rd out of 64 parishes for length of life with 22% of us smoking.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death, killing 443,000 Americans and 6,500 Louisianans each year.Smoking causes heart disease, the leading cause of death. But smoking doesn’t just kill; it leads to long-term suffering.

For every person who dies from tobacco use, another 20 suffer from one or more serious smoking-related illnesses.

Tobacco smoke hurts anyone who breathes it, including family and friends and children.

Smoking causes an estimated 90% of all lung cancer deaths in men and 80% of all lung cancer deaths in women.

Smoking causes emphysema, bronchitis, and chronic airway obstruction.

Smoking causes the following cancers:

o   Leukemia
o   Bladder
o   Cervical
o   Esophagus
o   Kidney
o   Lung
o   Mouth & Throat
