Obituary

Mattie Lee Magee
April 17, 1931 - December 13, 2017

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul. Psalm 23
Sister Mattie Magee was born April 17, 1931 to the late Allean Pittman and Percy Redmond of Fayette, Mississippi. She was a member of The Eastern Stars and also a very devoted usher and member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She departed this life on December 13, 2017 in Plano, Texas.
“Madear” or “Big Ma” (as she was known) came to Bogalusa in 1949 and worked as a cook. Later on in life she became a Master Florist at Casadaban Greenhouse in Abita Springs. Madear displayed her knowledge of gardening by growing beautiful flowers, having a lemon tree and growing gigantic collard greens in her yard.
Whenever you told her you loved her she would always reply “I Love You More”
She leaves joyous memories of her life to her brother, Burnell Smith of Prentiss, MS, her sister, Francis Stewart of Houston, TX and her special aunt, Mabel Magee of Bogalusa, LA. She also leaves a legacy of love to her children, Jimmie A. (Parris) Burgess of Plano, TX, Robert E. (Shirley) Redmond, Douglasville, GA, Johnny (Gladys) Redmond of Hampton, Virginia, Michael Redmond of Rochester, NY, Stephanie (Robert) Snead of Rochester, NY and a special daughter, Nelda Bruns of Bogalusa, LA. A “special thank you” to devoted friend Mr. Willie Short for helping in the upkeep of our mother’s yard and flowers. “Big Ma” also had 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxie Magee; her daughter, Pamela Sue King; and her grandson, Johnny Redmond, Jr.
Visitation will be at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, December 23, 2017 from 9:00 am to 10:45 am followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am.
