Teen Identified Who Drowned in Lake Ponchartrain

Mandeville Police have identified the teen who drowned in Lake Ponchartrain Saturday (April 29, 2017) as Chandler Byrd (15) from Ponchatoula.
Mandeville Police and St. Tammany Fire District IV had responded Saturday afternoon to the report of a teenage male in distress about 30 yards off the end of the fishing pier at Sunset Point. Byrd had reportedly been trying to recover his hat that had been blown off by strong winds. However, he sunk beneath the surface and was not seen again. First Responders were able to save an adult male (clinging to an ice chest) who initially jumped into the rough, wind-blown lake in an attempt to save the teen.
Search teams from the St. Tammany Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard provided search teams and Byrd was recovered west of the causeway bridge off of Lewisburg.
