Slidell Police Pursues and Deals With Man Brandishing a Machete

When Slidell Police Officer Marcev attempted to stop Rene Jaunet III for not wearing a seat belt Friday, (May 12, 2017), Jaunet allegedly fled, swerving into oncoming traffic, forcing other vehicles off of the roadway, disregarding a red traffic light, and driving at a high rate of speed. He eventually lost control of his vehicle and slid between two poles and struck a parked vehicle.
Jaunet reportedly exited the vehicle with a large machete and began swinging it while stating, “just shoot me”. Officer Marcev drew his service weapon for protection. The driver then dropped to the ground and began attempting to stab himself in the stomach with the machete. Officer Marcev switched to his taser, ordered him to drop the machete, and, when Jaunet refused, deployed his taser. The taser's prongs missed and Jaunet ran away while still carrying the machete. Officers surrounded the area and located Jaunet in an alleyway. Jaunet dropped to the ground, put the machete to his throat and began attempting to cut himself with it. Officer Marcev, with assistance from State Police Trooper Theriot, was able to talk Jaunet into putting the weapon down. Jaunet reportedly cried out several times during this incident for officers to shoot him and kill him and stated he needed help due to circumstances going on in his life.
Mr. Jaunet was taken into custody and brought to Slidell Memorial Hospital to be evaluated. Although this incident involved a cry for help, warrants will be pending for Jaunet upon his release, due to his reckless actions.
Chief Fandal stated: “although this began as a minor traffic violation, the driver put himself and others in danger due to his actions. I feel that it is very commendable that officers switched to less than lethal weapons when able to and were able to talk the driver into not harming himself. The driver was taken to the hospital and will hopefully get the help that he needs to get his life in order”.
