What started out as two friends going to a Covington Wal-Mart Grocery turned tragic yesterday (April 26, 2016) in Covington. Donald Wilburn Leavelle of Ponchatoula was recently discharged from the hospital and somewhat weak so his friend was going to drop him off at the front door of the store so he didn’t have to walk far.
As Leavelle got out of the truck, he took a couple of steps towards the entrance of the store but unbeknownst to the 60 year old driver, Leavelle turned around and walked back to the truck as if he was reaching for something in the bed of the truck. As he neared the side of the truck, one of the dually wheels struck Mr. Leavelle, knocking him to the ground and under the rear wheels of the truck. As the driver was driving off he saw through his rear view mirror Mr. Leavelle laying on the ground.
Emergency personnel transported Mr. Donald Leavelle to a local area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Impairment is not suspected in this case, and no charges will be filed.
