Trooper Hit While Investigating Crash

A Louisiana State Trooper was hit Thursday (February 23) evening while investigating a crash on I-59 near Slidell.  He was seated inside his fully market police vehicle which was parked on the shoulder and his emergency lights were on. A vehicle driven by Diane Michael Harris (22) of Slidell crashed into a vehicle driven by Ronald Dwayne Tillery of Boonville, Arkansas. The impact propelled Tillery's vehicle into the rear of the Trooper's vehicle. The impact caused the Trooper to be ejected from his vehicle into the median. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to Ochsner Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance.
Harris was cited for Careless Operation and No Seatbelt. Tillery was cited for Driving with a Suspended License and No Insurance. There were no other injuries in the crash.
Last night’s crash represents the third crash this year where a Trooper in the Troop L area was hit and injured by a vehicle during the course of his duties. In all three crashes, carelessness or impairment were contributing factors. Thankfully, all three Troopers survived the crashes.
If you find yourself passing a police officer, first responder, or any other vehicle stopped on the shoulder, please slow down, move over, and pay attention to your surroundings. Aside from being the law, it is the right thing to do.
