DA's Office Holds Training For Criminal Justice Professionals

District Attorney Warren Montgomery’s Office held two daylong training sessions for criminal justice system professionals on November 6 and November 8 at the Bogue Chitto State Conference Center. This year, the sixth annual event was named the Lewis Murray, III, Memorial Training For Law Enforcement, Prosecutors, And Judges in memory of the late Assistant District Attorney who worked as a prosecutor for more than 33 years and headed the Washington Parish office until his death in April.

“This was a great way to honor a man who dedicated so much of his life to the pursuit of justice,” Montgomery said. “And he trained many of the Washington Parish prosecutors who came after him.”

Pearl River Man Charged in Fatal Hunting Accident

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office has advised that Donald Jones, Jr. (22) of Pearl River, Louisiana has been charged with negligent homicide following a hunting accident that occurred Saturday morning (November 10, 2018) in the Honey Island Swamp in the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area.

Jones and his friend, a 23-year-old Pearl River man, were hunting hogs in the Peach Lake area of the Honey Island Swamp Saturday morning. Jones told responding deputies he shot in the direction of a hog and accidentally shot his friend in the chest. Jones immediately called 911 but the area where the two men were hunting is only accessible by boat and therefore took emergency responders longer than normal to respond.

While he was on the phone with emergency personnel, Jones rendered aid and performed CPR on his friend until emergency personnel arrived. However, the victim succumbed to his injuries.

STPSO detectives learned Jones was aware his friend was not wearing “hunter’s orange” and he did not know his friend’s location when he fired his gun at the hog.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is also looking into possible violations.

Slidell Area Man Shoots Adult Son

A Slidell area man was arrested Friday afternoon (November 9, 2018) after he shot his adult son in

the hand outside of the residence where they both lived.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on Queen Anne Drive in the Slidell area. William Hubbard, III (57) and his son had been arguing outside of their  home when the argument turned physical. Hubbard went inside the residence and returned with a shotgun. Hubbard fired the shotgun, striking the victim in the hand. 

The victim was transported to a area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Hubbard was arrested and booked in to the St. Tammany Parish Jail on the charge of Aggravated Second Degree Battery.

Slidell Respond to Overdose Death and Shootings – All Related

Slidell Police are investigating three overnight shootings, leaving one dead, one in critical condition, and one in stable condition; all believing to be related.

It all began Thursday night (November 8, 2018) when Slidell Police responded to a suspected drug overdose involving a 43-year-old female on Gwen Drive in Slidell. Joshua Cox (29), the son of the deceased female, was told of his mother’s death and asked his wife to drive him to the hospital. On the way to the hospital, an Cox and his wife got into an argument and he shot her once in the chest. Cox dropped his wife off at Slidell Memorial Hospital and fled the scene. Cox's wife is expected to survive.

Several hours later, Slidell Police responded to a report of shots fired at an apartment complex on Lee Street in Slidell. Joshua Cox was found lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. Cox was rushed to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The person responsible for shooting Cox has been identified and is cooperating with the investigation.

In an unexpected twist, during the course of the investigation at the apartment complex on Lee Street, Slidell Police located the body of an unknown male inside of a vehicle, who apparently suffered a gunshot wound.

Investigators believe the incidents are all related, however, the investigation is still on-going.
