Charles Raymond Morgan

April 5, 1946 — August 24, 2026

Charles Raymond Morgan was born to the late Ollie and Jessie Morgan in Poplarville, MS on April 5, 1946. He was the last of fourteen children.

Charles attended the Pearl River Training School in Poplarville, MS. He was inducted into the Army on April 2, 1969 where he served as a cook and also in the Vietnam War. While serving in the Army, he received four medals: National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign and Good Conduct. He was discharged from the Army on March 7, 1971.

On November 9, 1975, Charles was united in holy matrimony to Gwendolyn Diane Nelson for 32 years until her death in 2007 and to this union six children was born.

Charles was a member of St. John Temple COGIC under the leadership of Elder Booby Brown. He then moved his membership to First Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Howard Quillen, Jr. Later, he decided to join the family home church, Triumph Missionary Baptist Church where he became a member and ordained as a Deacon under the leadership of Rev. Dr. LaVerne Cook, Jr. He served on the Deacon Board and Trustee until his illness would not allow him to perform any longer.

Charles loved his family whole-heartily. He loved God and he loved his church. He loved to go fishing and crabbing. He loved to be around people and always doing for others. Especially, when it came down to former pastors and current pastor for their pastor anniversaries.

Charles was employed with Pittman Construction of New Orleans, LA and Charity Hospital of Bogalusa, LA as a painter. He was a good painter and did a lot in the community. He also loved to cook.

The lord sent an angel to St. Oaks Care Center in Carriere, MS on the morning of August 24, 2026 to carry him home to be with his parents, siblings and wife.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Ollie and Jessie Morgan; wife: Gwendolyn Diane Morgan; seven sisters: Ollie Stewart, Patricia Morgan, Rena Rawls, Vivian Lee, Francis Wilks, Sadie Bailey and Bertha Mae Morgan; five brothers: Robert Morgan, Joseph Morgan, Willie D. Morgan, Jessie H. Morgan and Samuel Morgan; step-son, Leon Nelson; aunts and uncles.

He leaves to cherish his two sons: Charles and Travious Nelson of Bogalusa, LA; three step-sons: Gerald Nelson of Baton Rouge, LA, Donald (Faye) Nelson of Lucedale, MS and Christopher (Yvonne) Nelson of McComb, MS; six grandchildren: Travon and Tanya Nelson, LaDasha Nelson, Daisha Mondy, La’Travious Morris and Donel Mondy; one brother: Lyman Morgan of Detroit, MI; mother-in-law, Hilda Brown of Wiggins, MS; God-son, Roderick Curney and host of nieces, nephews, beloved family members and many dear friends.

He will be truly missed by these words: “God loves you and so do I and there is nothing you can do about it.”

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026 from 3:00PM – 5:00PM at Crain and Sons Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 1:00PM at Triumph Missionary Baptist Church 412 Martin L. King Jr. Drive, Poplarville, MS 39470 with Pastor LaVerne Cook, Jr. – Officiating. Interment will be held at the Bogalusa Cemetery. 

Crain and Sons Funeral Home – Bogalusa are in charge of arrangements.
