Washington Parish Sheriff Jason Smith spoke this morning (September 18, 2026) in support of the Empty Chair Project, an initiative by Mandi Boyd with Hope Alive Recovery.
Twenty-four empty chairs, each representing a life lost to a drug overdose in Washington Parish since last September’s Empty Chair Event, are currently displayed in front of the Washington Parish Courthouse. The chairs will remain on display through September 25, 2025 serving as a visible reminder of the devastating impact of drug use and the lives lost in our community.
Sheriff Smith joined other local and state officials for the event, including District Attorney Collin Sims, Parish President Ryan Seal, State Representative John Wyble, and Washington Parish Coroner's Office Paul Thibodeaux.

Addiction is a weight that never lets up and anyone addicted, or anyone who has an addicted family member, knows the importance of being able to rest. Thank you to Mandi and Hope Alive for giving people an outlet and helping them find some rest, even if only for just a bit.” -Sheriff Smith
