On Wednesday (September 23, 2026), the Franklinton Police Department investigated a battery complaint involving an incident at the Liberty Inn motel. The complainant reported that a man she had met through social media held her at knifepoint inside a motel room. She later escaped and contacted police.
Officers returned to the motel and contacted the man, identified as 31-year-old Donte Burton of Kentwood, Louisiana. During his arrest, officers observed what appeared to be equipment and materials used to print checks. An investigator collected several cell phones, a computer, a printer, and several sheets of blank check paper for forensic examination.
The Franklinton Police Department Detective works in conjunction with the U.S. Secret Service Task Force and is working with its Forensics Lab in Metairie to examine the evidence.
Burton, who was wanted in several other jurisdictions, was booked on the charges of Resisting an Officer/Flight on Foot, Attempted Escape, Fugitive Other Jurisdiction (3 counts), and Aggravated Assault by the Franklinton Police Department and on the charges of Telephone Harassment/Subsequent, False Imprisonment, Criminal Damage (2 counts), Theft of Firearm, and Domestic Abuse Battery/Strangulation by the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office. No bond has been set at this time.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may follow.
Burton is presumed innocent unless proven guilty
