Obituary

Rose Marie Nix

November 2, 1947 - July 5, 2026

On Sunday morning, July 5, 2026, at 8:19 a.m., Marie Nix, lovingly known to generations of family and friends as Ma Ma, peacefully completed her earthly journey and entered eternal rest.

Born on November 2, 1947, in Angie, Louisiana, Marie was the beloved daughter of John D. Cotton and Vera Briggs. Although she experienced the heartbreaking loss of her mother while still an infant, that early tragedy never defined her life. Instead, she became a woman defined by unwavering faith, quiet strength, resilience, and an extraordinary devotion to family. Her courage and perseverance became the foundation upon which generations of her family would stand.

Although Marie was an only child, God had a different plan for her life. Through the family she built and the generations that followed, she became the proud matriarch of a legacy rooted in love, faith, and perseverance.

As a young woman, Marie made Chicago her home, where she built a life marked by hard work, determination, and unconditional love.

Throughout her life’s journey, Marie was blessed to share meaningful seasons with remarkable men who were the fathers of her beloved children.

Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J.W. Cherry. Together, they built a home grounded in love, compassion, integrity, and steadfast devotion to family. Within that home, every child was deeply loved, faithfully supported, and encouraged to become the very best version of themselves. The life they shared and the love they poured into their family became an enduring foundation upon which generations continue to stand.

Through every season of her life, Marie remained steadfast, meeting life’s joys and challenges with grace, dignity, and quiet resolve.

Marie was a devoted mother, grandmother, and faithful member of the Apostolic Church of God under the leadership of Bishop Arthur M. Brazier. Yet her greatest ministry was often found within the walls of her own home. There she created traditions that continue to live on through her family—unforgettable Christmas celebrations, Sunday dinners, music that filled every room, and legendary tea cakes that became beloved by family and friends alike.

Those who knew Marie knew she expressed love through action. She prayed faithfully, cared deeply, and served quietly. Her kitchen became a haven for her family, and her faith remained an anchor throughout her life.

Although Marie has departed this earthly life, the values she instilled continue to flourish in those she loved. Her greatest legacy is not found in possessions or accomplishments, but in the lives of the family she nurtured and the generations she inspired.

A Memorial Service will be at 10:00 AM on August 1, 2026 at Progressive Funeral Parlor in Chicago, Illinois.
