UPDATE May 12, 2026: St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Christopher Tape reports that the skeletal remains have been positively identified as those of Maurice A. Appleton who was born in 1959 and last resided in Slidell. He had been missing for several months. Evidence including clothing and surgical implants pointed to Appleton. The case remains open as investigators work to establish time, cause, and manner of death. Foul play is not suspected, but has not been completely ruled out. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 985-898-2338, Slidell Police Department at 985-643-3131, or the Coroner’s Office at 985-781-1150.
Dr. Tape’s staff has notified Appleton’s next of kin.

Original Story
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating after skeletal remains were discovered near Slidell on Monday (April 20, 2026) afternoon.
At approximately 4 p.m. Monday, STPSO deputies were dispatched to a retention pond near Indiana Avenue and Highway 11 after an individual fishing in the area located what appeared to be human skeletal remains in the water.
The St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office was notified, along with the LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services (FACES) Laboratory.
On Tuesday morning (April 21, 2026), representatives from the FACES Lab took possession of the remains and will assist in determining a positive identification.
At this time, foul play is not suspected.
