Obituary

Horace James

January 28, 1946 - December 13, 2025

Horace James was born on January 28, 1946, in Mount Hermon, Louisiana, to the late Nathaniel James and Estella Magee. On Saturday, December 13, 2025, God called one of His faithful servants home to eternal rest.

Horace was preceded in death by his loving parents, Nathaniel James and Estella Magee; six sisters, Alicia Magee, Polly James, Madeline Brumfield, Audrey Weary, Lattie Mae Sandifer, and Alice James-Kelly; and six brothers, Slade James, Curtis James, Tommy James, Walter James, Bobby James Sr., and Forace James.

At an early age, Horace accepted Christ and was baptized at Little Union Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Hermon, Louisiana. After graduating from Vernon High School in 1966, he relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he worked in various occupations, including as a truck driver at Schwegmann Distribution, warehouse technician at Glazing Steel, ice cream maker and specialty delivery driver at Gold Seal Creamy and Angelo Brocato, as he always was striving to provide for his family. He joined Holy Faith Missionary Baptist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana where he served as a treasurer and deacon for many years under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Dyson.

Following displacement caused by Hurricane Katrina, Horace made the decision to move to Washington Parish, where he reunited with his home church, Little Union Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Hermon, Louisiana. There, he served faithfully until declining health limited his ability to continue.

Horace had a special love for his dogs, affectionately known as his “fur babies,” and caring for them often became a family affair. He was well known for frequent walks around his favorite place, Winn-Dixie, where his warm smile and contagious laughter brightened the day of everyone he encountered.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and family man, Horace deeply valued family and touched the lives of many. He was truly a fighter at heart—strong, loving, and committed to those he held dear.

Horace James leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Patricia James of Franklinton, Louisiana; four children, two sons, Horace (Kiuana) James, Jr. of Waggaman, Louisiana, and Nathaniel James of Franklinton, Louisiana; two daughters, Amy James of Hammond, Louisiana, and Danielle (Garland) James Graves of Hammond, Louisiana; one sister, Listria Lewis of New Orleans, Louisiana; along with three grandsons Ivan Scioneaux, Horace James III, Jordan Michael James, and one granddaughter, Bethany Jara James; one great-grandchild, Kari Jari James; one God-child, Charles Collins, Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025 from 10:00AM - 12:00PM followed by funeral service at 12:00PM at Little Union Missionary Baptist 3266 Frankie Miller Road Mt. Hermon, LA 70450.
